Troubleshooting, how to change AT Tranny fluid

Hey guys, just joined forum to get some assistance for some tranny problems. I have a 1991 Runner with 179k. It shifts fine under local road conditions but on the freeway around 55-60mph, the RPM's hold at 3k-3500. Normally it should be in the mid 2K range.

Some more background info: I just got new tires but replaced with the same size. Also, sometimes when driving about 60mi through some hilly areas, the "AT/OIL TEMP" light comes on.

Need help with the following: What does the light mean, why isnt the car shifting, how do I change the tranny fluid? Does this year/make have a plug or a pan? I am assuming a plug. I want to start with some inexpensive repairs before I have to drop in a new tranny.

The A/T OIL TEMP Light means your transmission is getting too hot. The FSM says to pull over, put it in PARK and wait to see if the light goes off. Happens to me all the time when driving for more than 2hrs on the highway. As far as why it isnt shifting: Is your fluid level correct? Is your OVERDRIVE on or even working (mine turned off when i changed out my shifting console, but just wired them together and now it works)? Changing the transmission fluid out, I've heard, can be quite the task. I've been recommended to have a prof. mechanic do it, but then again thats cause i don't have the right equip.
