Truck goes into Neutral after a sudden stop!

Not sure what's going on but if I brake hard and come to a stop then for 3-6 seconds my truck (98 4Runner 4x4 v6) goes into neutral....
I can rev the engine and it just acts like its in Neutral and then seconds later it catches first gear.

I did a complete transmission flush at around 100k now it has 185k miles.

I've been reading about transmission slipping from other users that was 'maybe' due to gunk in the transmission and how they shouldn't do a flush as it might ruin the tranny. should i do a pan drain?

I'd do a drain just cuz its cheap - can do over next 3 oil changes to get majority of fluid changed. With that mileage you might try one of the additives (stick with a known name). The alternative is big $. Might be worth pulling the pan and cleaning it out - suspect no real replaceable filter but probably a screen and magnet in there. Some more AT knowledgeable person might point you to a solenoid that needs attention.

I've always been a manual trans guy - but you can't get them anymore. My '03 does similiar thing when I go voer the recently added speed humps in our neighborhood -- but only for a second or 2 (and I have less than 28k miles). Sure wish Yota would offer a version with the 6 spd used in the FJ!
