Truck Hit When Parked

Today, my dad parks his truck in a parking lot and comes out 2 minutes later and a truck hit it. Basically, there was another car double parked and the truck driver cut his turn to short and clipped the side of my dads 4Runner. Luckily, the driver was honest and didn't run away. Here are a few pictures he took in the parking lot. The damage may look small, but it seems very deep and in a bad place. There is some bare metal showing, a dent, and the taillight is cracked. In addition, the air suspension is stuck in the low position and it seems like no air will go into the air suspension. The rear of the truck is very close to the ground. How hard do you think it will be to fix the damage? Also, is the air suspension a coincidence or is there a wire that could have been clipped behind that panel? To me, it seems like this will be a big job. I am going to be a good son and give him my 4Runner to drive while his is in collision.

ouch, looks pretty harsh on the first pic. at least the driver was honest about the accident. Hope the repairs go well.. maybe led tail replacements? hehe

Sorry about the accident, but lucky for you guys the person was honest and stuck around. On my last car, I had it for 4 years and it was hit and run TWICE!

it looks like a pretty good repair. i'm not a body shop expert but the way the metal was bent does look like it would be an expensive repair. at least the guy was honest, hard to come by these days. my previous car was hit and run a couple times, no major damage other than bent license plate and an imprint of my metal plate cover on the front bumper.. as for the car lend, :thumbsup: but does his insurance not cover a rental car?

His insurance covers a rental car but he is used to driving a 4Runner. In addition, it will take a few days before everything is set up (police report, insurance adjuster). Basically, the truck is not driveable becuase something happened to the air suspension. It won't go back up to the normal driving height.

Ouch, sorry to see that! At least nobody was hurt.

It'll probably be an extensive repair, it'll either take a lot of repairing or they just weld on a new rear quarter. Maybe the impact knocked something in the air suspension out of place?

man that sux, that is my worst fear that mine will get damaged parked somewhere. i try to park away from people, but you cant do that alot of the time. i dont like that its kinda like its not under your control. hope it gets fixed soon, glad that guy stuck around

Sorry Mark,

Shit happens; at least he will not have to make a claim with his insurance. Somehow an air line must have got disconnected or a sensor got misaligned, it shouldn't be a big deal.

Mark, you and your family seem to havebad luck with 4-Runners. I hope that this trend will not continue. But, now you can get some of those new fangled LED tail lights.

Here is an update on what is going on. We took the truck to the collision shop today. The rear air suspension was completely gone so you felt each bump 5 minutes after you went over it. It was not a good idea to eat before riding in that truck! It definitely would have been smarter to flatbed it there. The estimate is at $3,700 without considering internal damage. He will need a new bumper cover, taillight, and rear quater panel just from a visual inspection. As for a rental, we have a 2006 Grand Cherokee Laredo. The shop said the truck will take at least 2 weeks to repair. Who would think that this much damage would occur from just leaving your car in a parking lot!

My family and I have definitely not had luck with 4Runners lately. Hopefully this will be the last thing to go wrong for a long time. I told him to have the shop put on the 2006 tallights. As for purchasing a 2006, I don't know what his plans are.
