For pure off-roading fun, i would pick Dodge PowerWagon or maybe Hummer H3 (which is quite impressive from what i heard). For everything, i would pick TLC. If i want to support my local mechanic shop, then i would pick either Touareg or LR3.

Here's the deal, the media only promotes newly designed vehicles. You can see this in this comparison. The new GC is a great example of this. This vehicle is NOT even capible of basic/mild off-roading (even though it has that wonderful "Trail Rated" emblem on its fender) without major failures. Another example of their agenda is to not even include one of the best mid-sized SUVs ever made; the "4Runner".

In this same issue of Truck Trend they had a long term wrap-up of their 2004 4runner limited V8. I really learned a lot from their write-up. I did not know that 2004 was the first year of the 4th generation 4runner. I also did not know that in 2005 "mid year" change they added a new 5 speed transmission and the new VVTi engine. I think they felt the most significant part of the 4runner was the power rear window They also thought that the new 4th generation 4runner was good enough to be the new Landcruiser, but they did not say why. It is kind of scary that the editors of this magizine don't know or don't care that "WRONG" information is printed in their rag every month and many people believe this garbage and base buying decisions on this crap. I've found that Truck Trend is one of the worst for printing stuff that is so far out my wife would know it was wrong. These guys are clowns and I will never renew my subscripition. Fool me once shame on you, folk me twice shame on me.

Get use to it! MotorTrend and TruckTrend are notorious for printing the wrong shit over and over again! Very little research goes into their articles.
