truck won't start

I have a '96, 2.7l 4x4 auto 4runner i have just replaced the engine harness in it but truck wont start and i think it might have something to do with the neutral position switch on the tranny.

I turn the key,the dash lights up, then hit the key to engage the starter and nothing happens. not even a click. is there a way to override the newtral position sensor switch to see if that is the issue.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

ps. i had to do a little soldering to the wire harness since all the plugs to the tranny were missing from the harness i picked up at the junkyard. so i salvaged the tranny part of the harness from a damaged harness i got with the truck so i had to color match about 30wires.

One little thing has me puzzled and i surely hope its not going to be the issue with my nostart.

there are like 5white blackstriped wires in the harnes going to diffrent plugs on the tranny. I assume they are ground wires and i hope that as long as they are grounded at the ecu,it should'nt matter if they are'nt connected to the proper socket in the ecu they will still ground the connection at the tranny and make it function.

Toyota does like to utilize white with a black stripe for their ground wires. Those wires should actually combine at some point in the harness to form a junction block or ground cable to the frame. Unless one or two of those wires are needed by the ECU, but often they get marked as different colors.

so i should be looking elsewhere like maybe the starter is faulty since the truck has'nt ran in 6months and sat in a garage untouched after the motor was replaced and the wire harness bucherd by previous owner.

Well first thing is first, check fuses, relays, connections. After verifying that those components are not at fault I'd try get at the starter and use a remote starter switch to activate the solenoid directly and see if the solenoid works. If it clicks then you know it works and your starter motor is more than likely failed, conversely if you just bypass the solenoid you can verify that the issue is within the solenoid,you can either seek out parts to rebuild the solenoid or replace the starter.

If the starter and solenoid are not your problem you will have to find the circuit responsible for commanding the solenoid on and test it from the battery to the solenoid to find out what the issue might be. At this point you're delving into some serious diagnostics as you'll have to check the circuits and associate components (i.e. Park/Neutral Safety Switch, Ignition Switch, ect ect.)

could it be the starter

after reading a post about another member submerging his toy in mud and he had to replace the starter it got me thinking that i may have the same issue since the previous owner did the same thing but he ended up replacing the motor.

now i wish i had a heated garage to work on it tomorow and its to dam cold here -25 celcius

its getting complicated and colder

so yesterday i got a break in the weather and tested the starter and it works fine but for good measure i will rebuild the solonoid and starter since i have easy access to it


now is there a way to bypass the neutral safety switch on a auto tranny
