The 4 x 2's come with a LSD from the factory:

"Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD) - Standard"

The 4 x 4's do NOT have this.

WRONG! An Auto Limited-Slip Differential (ALSD) is not the same as a traditional (cone, clutch...ect) LSD found in many "American" vehicles. An ALSD uses differential breaking to simulate a traditional LSD. The 4X4's have ATRAC which by design, incorporates the ALSD function within the 4X4 software.

Yea, Auto LSD is more of a coverup for a real mechanical LSD.

The actual differential in a 5th gen 4runner is an Open, but the Auto-LSD (or Traction Control, or whatever you want to call it) is just a braking/throttle technique the 4runner uses to simulate LSD.

So anyone try this yet? I've heard of people getting good results on older 4runners. Just curious if this actually works for a 5th gen and if so, what part(s) to get.

auto-LSD button on 2WD 1014 4runner

questions about the auto-LSD function on 2014 2WD 4runner as the user manual seem to be a little vague:

1.)The auto-LSD button on the over-head console has the 'OFF' word printed in it.....does this mean that if this button is lighted, that the auto-LSD function is indeed turned off ?? see photo of the button below:

2.) I don't recall pressing this button, but it goes on(lighted) or off(not lighted). Does this mean it will turn off or on automatically depending on road conditions ??

3.) When or under what conditions do I press this button manually(if ever) ?

There is not "simulated LSD" - it IS a Limited Slip Differential - its just using the brake pads regulated through the ABS system to provide the drag on the spinning wheel to be directed to the wheel w/ traction instead of clutch packs in the differential.

Is there a difference? In operation - no. In maintenance, yes! The auto LSD uses the easily/cheaply replaced brake pads to provide the drag instead of clutch packs in the diff.

Does it work automatically? Yes and no. Normal operation is TRAC which means using the ABS to provide LSD function - BUT throttle is limited based on wheel spin. If you want unlimited throttle response with two wheels pulling, hit the button and get Auto LSD.

I have an '07 Tacoma w/ Toyotas mechanical LSD (what? Toyota made mechanical LSD?) and the ALSD in my '12 Tacoma. In operation there is no noticeable difference in performance. Again, no difference - they are equal!

Unlike the TrueTrac design, the factory ALSD works just fine w/ larger tires and is just as seamless in operation. You've got the best LSD set-up you could hope for, swapping to a TrueTrac will be a downgrade.

Funny thread resurrection - guy in 2011 asking about LSD in a 2runner, and his sigline shows the 2011 2runner sold to buy a 2012 4runner TE

Thanks for the explanation specially about the lower maintenance on the auto-LSD since it is brake-based.. I was more concerned about the "auto-LSD OFF" button in the overhead console being lighted sometimes and other times it is off even though I did not press it.
I was so used to the old days where everything was manually shifted/operated from the clutch to the seats to the windows to the door locks(Its been a long time since I bought a vehicle), but now i see all these automatic buttons/switches, even a button for spinal support.,so with all these auto-buttons i was worried of more things going wrong/breaking down...now i see in the news about 'self-driving' and 'self-parking' vehicles LOLs. .. I just noticed this 'auto-LSD' video that explains everything: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeqsUT7HpAM
More videos on the various features on the 2014 4runner posted in another 5th generation thread ---> I suggest 2014 owners bookmark it in their internet browser. here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RFgD61dpXE
