Trunk and Hatch Issue

I have an 03 4Runner and recently my trunk electronics have been acting up. When the engine is not on, the electronic latch will not work. Once I turn the engine on and press the "unlock" button again, the electronic latch works fine.

Also, when I first start the car, the rear defrost and wiper will not work. But if i lower the rear window just a little then put it all the way back up, both the wiper and defroster will work again. Also, each time I start the car, the automatic function for the rear window won't work until I reset it.

I thought that it may be a battery issue since everything starts to work again once the engine is on so I replaced the battery but this did not fix anything. Also, I checked the wiring in the top left of the trunk and everything seems to be fine.

Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be?

Its your back door ecu. Theres a tsb for exactly that problem. The fix is a new ecu.

Its not the rear ECU... I have a friend who works at a dealership and he talked to one of the head mechanics and they said that the rear ECU either works or doesn't work at all. The fact that it works with the car on means that it is not the ECU. The dealer mechanic has no idea what it is either.

Each time the rear window (driver's window or moonroof) loses power either a blown fuse or battery disconnect, the auto up/down, open/close, functionality is lost. Does your driver window (or moonroof) lose its auto functionality?
