Try to save supercharger from fire salvaged T4R?

Auto salvage down the road just got a ‘97 and posted it on Facebook. It was a total loss due to a fire. It has a TRD supercharger and they want $400 for the supercharger.

Is it worth the gamble? Or is there no way it’s gonna be salvageable?

I wouldn't touch that. The engine bay looks like it got extra toasty in there and I would suspect internal damage to the supercharger and be willing to bet that it has warped the rotor or housing enough to cause issues even if you were to rebuild it.

what a shame. either way, the thing would need a full rebuild....new bearings, , seals, fluid etc. And that's if it did not get any structural damage from the fire.

Yeah, that’s the obvious concern. But I don’t know if it got extremely hot or not because a lot of the plastics aren’t even melted they’re just charred. I’m sure it would depend on both how hot the fire got and for how long it burned. And unfortunately, there’s no way of knowing.

I’m a mechanic and have access to all the tools/equipment needed to do a complete rebuild. I’ve wanted a SC for years and have been looking for one that’s worn and needs a complete overhaul so I can save money. I’m just not spending $3-4k for a blower on a vehicle that’s 20 years old with nearly 300k miles on it.

But with a 3” lift, 33s and armor she sure could use the boost to make it drive at least normal.

Not for $400 I wouldn't even touch it. Maybe $40-$100 as a possible risk.

If you could pull it and inspect before spending $400 you might as well try. I would guess if the rotor spins freely the housing and rotor are within spec. If its warped any the rotors couldn't technically spin about a straight axis.

Good point. I’m going to look at it now. I’ll try to spin it, and see b just how bad the fire damage looks in person.

Yeah, I wouldn't touch it. That thing is cooked like a rack of ribs. I have a feeling you'll get partially through trying to salvage it, look at the $1000+ you've spent and all the time wasted and wish you would've just spent the $2500-3000 for someone's used blower.
Also, supercharging at 300k... :tape2: I understand what you're saying and trying to save money, but I'd hold off on penny pinching for a little while. That can be a very risky gamble and I would not be shocked whatsoever if you were staring down the ass of a new transmission soon after
