Trying to help a friend

I am a Land Cruiser guy so 4runners are new to me. So here is the story. I have a friend who owns a 2000 4runner 6cyl. 4wd. It has has a problem with a lope when driving. Was told it was the fuel pump and had it replaced. On the way home the truck died and fuel was leaking from the truck (she was not sure from where). So took back to the shop and was told it was the vapor canister. So the mech loosened the gas cap and some of the vacuum lines and she was able to drive the truck although it still loped. the mech replaced the canister and reconnected the vac. lines but the truck still lopes.. Now if she puts the gas cap on tight and drives about 2 miles the truck will die. If she leaves the cap loose she can drive but it still lopes. I looked at the truck and pulled p0440 code. I looked at the FSM online and looks like possible vacuum line problem or VSV or filler tank valve. Any suggestions..........would this cause a lope?

yeah that's what I'm getting form the definition as well.

Maybe since it is having a problem lope-ing it means its not running smooth? Or even with a long steady stride? Lol

Lope = surging
I had my gas tank off recently and when I put it back on I crossed the vent and return lines coming from the tank causing the charcoal canister to vent raw gas onto the ground. The two hoses slip onto metal lines using hose clamps. I would check this before buying into a bad canister. Also after I swapped the hoses back it vented some more raw gas until it emptied the hose and then no more problems. I did not have the other problems you describe.

This make sense. There has to be a crossed line or a leaky connection somewhere in the vapor emissions system. I gotta think that if you could get it to leak gas again, it would lead you right to the problem.
