Trying to pin down what to buy

I have been shopping for quite a while now for my 1st 4Runner. I go back and forth on which generation focus on (except the latest generation...too much $$). I live in Western NC, am looking for a good all around beast. I work with youth and love to go out into the woods, but also have a family and want something reliable and safe. been looking at 04-06 a good bit, V-8...not sure why exactly other than I do pull a trailer from time to time and I just like the sound of a V-8. But the V-8 is full time 4x4? What features are critical. Would you get the 3rd Generation instead? I am hoping to find one around 10k. I found an 04 with hail damage (v-8 sport) for 10k...and someone pulled the trigger before I could get it.

I have an 05 V8 (4th gen) and absolutely love the vehicle. The V8 models are full time 4WD. It all depends what you are looking for in your truck, but the SR5 trim come nicely loaded. If you are looking for upgraded shocks, hood scoop, and a few other options, go for a sport. If you need luxury features like leather, auto lights, power seats, heated seats, etc. go for the Limited. A few key points about the 4th gen:
-V8 was upgraded in 2005 with VVTi technology and hp/torque was slightly increased
-Rear spoiler changed in 2005 to have the hump in back
-2006-2009, facelift with LED taillights, projector beam headlights, slight interior trim changes

To sum up, the 4th gens are smoother on the road but less rugged than the previous gens off road.
