trying to upgrade audio in 03 sr5 4runner

first of all, ill tell you guys right now i dont understand how the audio works in 4runners. i have the stock system and not the JBL system, im pretty sure? but im not positive on how to tell.

is it possible to install like a single 12" sub and amp?

whats with people taking off the mounting on the sides of the back of the truck? is that necessary to install a sound system? is installing a sound system on 4runners harder then on most other cars/trucks or something? sorry i'm just a little confused

also if someone can answer those questions for me, after that, id like to know how many speakers there are in my 03 4runner.. im kind of confused on all this but i know for sure i want a system in my 4runner. thanks MUCH

I have an 03 SE with JBL 10 speaker single CD system. It clearly says JBL on the face plate of the head unit in gold letters. Believe yours has 6 speakers - one in each door for sure - not sure if perhaps 2 are dual cone to give you the 6 though. Mine has the 4 in doors, tweeter by each front door by mirrors, speaker in center of dash, sub-woofer in rear right, and 2 up in rear corners where you probably have inside mirrors. The amp for the JBL is attached to the housing in the rear with the sub-woofer. The stock radio doe not have an external amp. Sure you can add amp and woofer - at that size you probably will need to build a custom enclosure though. Do some searches here - several have documented their installs with photos.
