TSB for converter

I have an appointment tom. for service and one of the things I want fixed is the converter's. The sulfer smell is BAD and embarrasing. The stealer is going to tell me that its normal but we all know they can fix it. I don't consider it normal on a 36K truck and I'm not going to accept that as an answer

Both stealers in my area are a__holes and morons, so are there any tsb's out for the converter.

As much as what people complain about this toyota should do something instead of say this is "normal" or "can't duplicate"

Its a 05 V8

yes but it is normal, EVERY car does that, when you drive with the back down it creates a vacum causing the exhaust to enter the car.....it is caused by too rich a fuel mixture going in and not being burned....that sulfur smell is the unburned gas going through the catalytic converter

Sounds like a waste of fuel to me. Is there a way to lean-out the air/fuel ratio easily?

oh boy.......

its EFI, there is no way to adjust fuel mixture/timing without a chip...our 4R's do not have carburetors!

Um yeah...

...Or a piggy-back system like an Apexi AVC-R. Is there a similar item that is more plug-and-play w/4R's?

i have no idea but electrical components are few and far between for a car like the 4r...nobody that own's them wants to do shit like that

I'm not going to accept that as an answer. I have had many cars in my life and 3 currently. 1993 cobra 2005 srt 10 ram and the 2005 T4r. Are you telling me the fuel mapping is more aggresive in the 4 than in my cobra or the srt10. Which means that there is more unburned fuel that is causing that is getting to the converter. The only one that is bad is a Toyota. I can't put up with the smell especially when you have clients in the car and they notice it.

I'm obviously not the only one that has this problem with the t4r nor will I be the last. It sounds to me through obvious deduction that the t4r's have a problem and that it could be possible that toyota used poor quality converters or maybe a different material for the converters.

I'm just not going to take the generic rejection that "they all do that, it's normal" (you know the dealer is going to say that also), I want it fixed.

Who has had the converters fixed under warranty?

That is great but will that cover a 2005 with a V8. Thanks for the info Mike. You rock man.

You can only smell it when the back window is down, none of those other cars had rear tailgate windows that went down. That is the only reason you smell it!

You know I'm not here to make any enemies but you can smell it if the back window is up. The window on my truck is a SRW so it will let in air from the rear...even though its not as close to the tail pipe as the rear window on the t4r. Point being, it's not right and I'm not going to settle for anything that's not right.

You can trivialize all you want but the converters on the t4r are of poor quality in my belief.

And reading your sig line I would go with the Revo's. I have had them and absolutly loved everything about them.

The only other tire I would consider at this time is the Pirelli Scorpion ATR. I have heard good things about this tire but have not seen one in person. It is relatively new but time will tell for its durability. Maybe its worth a look?

Thanks for the input. It's going to be a tough decision, that's for sure. The only thing about the Revos that is preventing me from pulling the trigger is that many members on this board have complained about the Revo's performace in the snow, which is very important for where I live. I will figured it all out. Thanks again!
 
I believe that is the WRONG tsb for your car. That one is for the v6 model only (1UZ engine). I've attached the V8 model. You need to check your vin # against the data in this TSB to line up what part number you need. MAKE SURE the dealership CLEARLY understands that you need the NEW part, and not just another of the same part, which is much cheaper and most dealerships default to. This repair is covered under the 80k mile emissions warranty, so you're good. Yes, you will have to wrestle with them a bit, but if they refuse to do the repair, simply call Toyota Corporate and have them make the call to the dealership. They'll fall in line then, trust me.

I tried to get mine replaced a few months ago, and got the run-around as well. Long story short, upon leaving that hell-hole POS dealership, I redlined the engine while in neutral and sitting in the service bay. Told that prick "smell it now, idiot?". Needless to say, I wasn't asked to take the customer satisfaction survey.

I haven't had time to get it fixed at the better dealership across town. However, I have noticed that if you drive with a lite foot, it doesn't come up. I have also noticed that it's a WONDERFUL little tool to get tailgaters off your butt!

No, not all cars do this, period. The only other time I've ever come across this problem was in 1986, with our Acura Legend. They replaced the cat's, and all was fine. If every car did this, the entire planet would probably smell like a greasy New Castle Rat's With Hat's FART "I'm quite familiar with Indiana. Brother was born in Ft. Wayne, I lived in Layfayette, and have family in Indi & Richmond".

Thanks Mike and nc211 for the knowledge.

I had the revo's on my jeep cherokee sport. I think the jeep was considerably lighter than the 4 and maybe that is the difference. I can't complain at all about the revo's. I drive like I just escaped from the nut house and stole the frist car I could get my hands on :driving: I would drive on back roads that were unplowed and many times almost drifted shut. I would rarely use 4wd but if I did it was most likely just to play:driving: I put almost 65000 miles on them and they were bald at the end but still got incredible wet traction

Maybe mine were the exception:confused: I don't think I'm biased because I would also consider the pirelli scorpion atr as another all around good option.

Not trying to force my opinion just relaying my experience with em

Looks like I this problem over the weekend. My engine check light went on and so is my VSC OFF light lit up as well. Went to the dealership and they said that it was something wrong with the catalytic converter...hmmm...coincidence?? I don't think so. Thanks for the TSB regarding this, I'll take this to them and have them change to the specific parts.
