I have a 2009 SR5 4x4 that seems to be having the same problem that i found in the 5th gen thread for tranny lag.

5th gen thread

T-SB-0166-10 6/29/10

Quote:
Some vehicles may exhibit a harsh shift on acceleration below 20 mph during the 2-1 downshift on vehicles equipped with an A750 transmission. The Engine Control Module/ECM (SAE term: Powertrain Control Module/PCM) calibration has been revised. Use the following repair procedure to address this condition.
This TSB applies to vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below:

* 2WD JTEZU5JR#A5001122
* 4WD JTEBU5JR#A5002648

This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emission Warranty, which is 96 months or 80,000 miles.

Do other 4th gen owners seem to have this problem too? I seem to notice mine when coming off a dead stop shifting from 1st to 2nd, but more than that when idling around 10 to 20 mph and then hitting the gas its really noticable. Would it be worth calling the dealership or are they going to tell me it doesn't apply??

Thanks in advance!!

+1 for me. I've notice similar acceleration/tranny lag that you described. I can repeat the problem at a certain intersection by my house. If I'm at the light, and it cycles to green, I go through the intersection and have to slow down for a dip at the end. When I go back on the gas to start climbing a hill, I notice the engine rev up, then it goes through a rough shift from 1st to 2nd.

I may check the stealership to see what they say. I'll keep you posted.

Hmm interesting, sounds exactly like my 4runner as well... How do you know if your
vehicle is equipped with the "A750" trani??

I have a 2009 Sport, while I didn't note the specifics I also have experienced spots where there is a lag in power at low speeds.

I've been doing some digging on this and I also found a TSB for the Tacoma for the same problem.

TSB # 0166-10 – Applies to Tacoma pickups

It describes the exact same issue and both this one and the TSB for the 4Runner 2010 say to flash the ECM with a new version. Maybe 4Runner owners just havn't complained enough for them to release a TSB for the 4Runner. I have an appointment for this Friday to see what they say.

I have the same problem.......

I've been driving my 2004 T4R Sport Edition for about 2 months now, and that's my only complaint about it. I actually thought that I just needed to adjust to an automatic transmission, because i've been driving a manual 5-speed Mazda3 for the last 5 years.... so I was used to being in the gear I wanted, when I wanted, and no delay....

But what you all are describing is EXACTLY what I've noticed. Definitely interested to see what you find out at the dealership.

Funny the 06 Toyota Corolla has the EXACT same issue (ecm causes a harsh shift) Seems toyota had a bad batch of ECM's, some even cause the engine to suddenly shut down.

Found a ton of info on Toyota Nation, for the Corolla. Now this is going to bug me on my 05 4runner. It is covered for 8 years or 80K miles.

Sittin' at the Stealership now....... I'll keep you posted, I came armed with both TSB's in hand, I said i know they aren't for the 2009 4Runner but its the exact same problem, hopefully they don't just brush it off!!

Well after my visit with the dealership still no fix!!!!! they drove it and admitted that it doesn't shift quite right but they tried applying the TSB fix for the Tacoma but the computer wouldn't let them do it to a 4runner. They said at this point Toyota hasn't released a fix for it, but they will call their Toyota Tech Rep and file a complaint for the 2009 4Runner for this problem and if they get enough they should come out with a fix. So I guess I have to live with it for now.

My 03 V6 Sport does the same thing. So did my 04 Lexus RX330. It's a Toyota problem that has been around for years. I had my Lexus to the dealer multiple times to resolve it. Software update after software update and it never was fixed.

Interestingly though, my 05 Sequoia nor my 06 Tundra had the symptoms.

I am not sure if it is the same problem but mine doesn't shift down to first from second until after 5-10 seconds of sitting at a light.

Any thoughts? Or is this a different problem?

Does it feel like a clunk? A slight jolt forward? Mine does this. Usually only after a hard stop.

Yes, I realize this is an old thread.

I get this exact same thing on my '03 4.7 . Super annoying. The clunky downshift. I kind of just accepted it as a T4R thing, but maybe I should finally push it at the stealership...

2 things:
1) The comment you're responding to was posted (almost) 6 years ago. Just saying.
2) More to the point, that's most likely not a 2-1 downshift but rather the common "driveline clunk". You just need to grease the driveshaft expansion joint.
