TSB on sulfur smell for V8 03-04 4 Runners

I don't know if this is news or not, it could be old information, but it looks as if Toyota has released a TSB for the sulfur smell on the V8 engines for both model years. I do not have an actual copy of the TSB, but I figured I'd pass on the info.

EG020-04, EXCESSIVE SULFUR DIOXIDE ODOR, 2003 – 2004 model year 4Runner vehicles equipped with the 2UZ–FE engine produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs listed (see the TSB for the VIN #'s).

All I have is the TSB #. I don't actually have a copy which shows what the potential fix is. Maybe those who have the problem could take the TSB # to the dealer and have them do a search? Hopefully this is good news...

thanks guys! i wonder if they'll do it under warranty even though i have a magnaflow muffler in there??

i have about 3,500 miles ... and sure would like to get it under warranty, but i'm worried that they'll refuse to because i put in the magnaflow (and just the muffler, and exhaust tips).

This is great! Wonder if a vibration fix is on the way. Course it only took them a year and a half to fix this...

Cool ... though I've really only smelled that stench once or twice. Could have easily been coming from a passenger.

Well, who is going to be the guinea pig here. Mine falls into the vin range for the campaign. Im thinking I might go ahead and call my dealer. I figure all the 4runners are coming from the factory with this new setup so it cant be bad. My biggest concern is making sure it gets done correctly.

Yeah, me too. I figured I would wait a little while for the TSB to be out long enough that all the dealers know what they are doing. I was afraid of being the first one to go to my dealer and not have the techs know what they are doing. I may do it within a month or so. Anyone who has it done let us know how it goes.

Obviously the redone ECU is doing something, but what? Will it correct the problem at the cost of performance??? What exactly is it changing in the ECU programming???

I took mine in today and took the TSB along with me ... they have to order the cat. and some other part because they don't keep them on hand. Be sure you call and check to see if they have the necessary parts in stock before you go. (mine had to go for other reasons too, just thought i'd take the TSB along and add that to the list)

It's the same programming you would get if you bought a new 04 today.

Well it wasn't the original design, it was done to fix a problem with SOME trucks. Just because all '04 have this does not mean it is better. Again it was done to fix something not really to improve anything.

I want to know what it does exactly and if it affects performance.

I have to disagree with Toybox on this one. It has been a problem with ALL the vehicles. They found a fix, implemented it at the factory and are correcting the ones b4 that.

Correction.... Toyota has NOT implemented the "fix" at the factory. If you read the latest TSB again, you'll see that they are not putting in the new cat.

Really??? I don't have the smell! Drive with the back window down and I still don't have the smell. And I know the majority of people do not have the smell.

A fix for one thing may affect other things adversely.

I dropped off my truck yesterday and they are doing the fix today. I'll let you know if it is a fix!

It's bad enough that they are flashing the ECU without describing what's changed. It's worse that dealerships have taken it upon themselves to do the flash without swapping the CAT at the same time. If I read the TSB correctly, it never says it's OK to do one without the other.
