TSB on sulfur smell for V8 03-04 4 Runners

Surprise, the cats are on backorder. No flash, though, they'll wait for the parts. Will reprt back when everything is done. My wife was pissed about the truck being in and out of the shop, till I blasted off the line with the rear window down. No complaints on helping me take it in next time...

mine has the parts on order, but they're back-ordered about 2 weeks here. they were going to flash the ECU now and then install the parts when they came in, but he held off (thank goodness) and will flash and install the cat. at the same time.

2 week backorder, wow...nothing like having to wait...what else is new. Hopefully with the new cat assembly it goes away once and for all. I am just going to wait til everyone here gets the part and has it installed and has no smell...thanks to everyone for being the first ones to go to the dealer for the TSB, the pioneers...lol....have a good one

as you might guess from all the complaints about it, no, the smell does not go away naturally. they have to flash the ECU and replace the cat ... but the cat is backordered about 2 weeks in Texas and apparently in Oklahoma as well ... soooo ... you may want to get those parts ordered when you have the chance if you plan on taking advantage of the fix mentioned in the latest TSB.

Really??? I don't have the smell! Drive with the back window down and I still don't have the smell. And I know the majority of people do not have the smell.

A fix for one thing may affect other things adversely.

I don't have the smell either. At least, not enough to complain about. I can get it to produce a slight suferous odor, but the back window must be down and I have to really put my foot into the gas. Even so, it's not enough to be even slightly annoying.

I guess if it aint broke, don't fix it! I'll wait to see if the problem develops in the future, but otherwise, I'm completely baffled!

Mine doesn't smell, but I never drive with my back window down. Why when you have automatic temp control would you drive with the rear window down? Plus on any vehicle doesn't driving with the rear window down pull exhaust into the cabin? Why would you want to do that?

Dude! Driving with the rear window down is one of the coolest things about the 4Runner. There's nothing like driving down the road with the roof open and the rear window down a ways to get the air flowing nicely through the truck.

I'm not sure about the 4th gen runners but on my 3rd gen, I can drive around all day with the rear window down and I don't smell any exhaust fumes. Part of the reason could be that the exhaust pipe angles out behind the rear tire instead of straight out the back.

12000 miles on my and I am still making money off bottling up my exhaust fumes and selling it as fart spray! It sure smells bad, but I still get a kick out of gassing someone that pisses me off.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

My 04 Runner is going into the shop this weekend. I waited 2 weeks for the back ordered parts, but this thread has definatly cleared up the stink thats been coming out of my exhaust.

Now, does anybody have the model number for the 6CD Scion HU? Much thanks for your help.

kimboy - so what you're saying is that the thread helped you understand the smell? or do you actually mean that you already put the parts in and flashed the ecu and that the actual smell is gone? because if i am reading your post correctly, then the parts are in but you will be having them installed and everything this upcoming weekend ... ?

My 2004 V6 Sport has the same smell. I never noticed it until I drove with the rear window down. And just the other day I was driving with my kids and had the rear window down. When I stepped on it one of my boys says "Daddy, you farted and it stinks!" Sure was a good laugh.

Picked my truck up this afternoon and the stink is gone!!!!

Hooray. Take yours in and get it fixed. I did about 100 miles of travelling afterwards, and it feels great. Rear window down, no worries! No after effects on drivability/power/performance etc. A good TSB, and worth your time.

Hopefully I will have the same results as you did. My truck goes in for the Sulfer TSB this Saturday 6/26.

Has anyone tried the kenwood KSC-WA62RC — The wOOx? I would really like this thing under my seat. But I havn't heard any reviews on it.

I am not sure I understand the VIN range on this TSB??? My vehicle has had the smell from day one but it is not within the effective VIN range. Anyone have any ideas on this? I have a 2003 S/E V8.

The ## can be any character and it has to be less than the VIN specified. Right? I need to get some more sleep!
