The thing that pisses me off about the TSB, or lack there of, is that NOTHING changed in regards to the 4R's exhaust system from '06 to '07. Correct me if I'm wrong. Why they wouldn't offer the same fix, and pay for it, for the '07's as they would for the 06's eludes me.

Actually, it's covered by the emissions warranty, which IIRC is 8yrs/80k. As long as your vehicle exhibits the problem in the TSB, they will fix it. They will not fix it if the problem isn't present.

There is always a risk when having the dealer do major surgery on the truck that they could break something in the process. There's one thread around here somewhere with a horror story about how the dealer really botched things up in the process of tearing the exhaust system apart.

i just took my T4R in today to have the sulfur odor corrected. they ordered the parts and it should take 5 days for them to get it, then back to the dealer i go.
i also had them replace my aux port with a noise filter due to a interference while using AUX and cigarette lighter for charging ipod. (if you expirence this, take it to the dealer, under warranty they should replace it with an updated version of the aux port with Noise Filter according to the service advisor.)

I went to the Toyota dealer and this is what he said. Since March of 06 (the date of the TSB) every vehicle has been built with the most recent catalytic converter. I asked if that was true, why I am getting the sulfur smell and he said "gas". He explained that some additives interact with the exhaust system and produce the smell. Since I do shop around for gas AND the smell is intermittent, I agreed to try ARCO and Union 76 (his recommendation) to see if the smell persists after a few tanks. That sounds reasonable. He said that if the smell persists, he will contact the Toyota rep and detail my complaint.

I have read this in other posts, but quite frankly, seems like a cop out on Toyota's part. I don't think with gas prices the way they are right now, that I should have to drive further and pay more for a "premium" quality gas from a particular retailer or supplier.
Interesting that they said they started manufacturing the newer 4R's with different exhaust components. I've experienced the bad smell with my '07 as well. Doesn't sound (or smell) like the new exhaust components did the trick...

Unfortunately, in Colorado we don't have ARCO or 76 stations. I wonder what works well out here?
This isn't my biggest complaint with my 4R and really, I don't have many at all. I've been very satisfied with my 4R so far.
The only time I drive with my rear window down is when I have my dog in the very back, and even then it's only about half way down so she can't jump out. I never experience the smell with the rear window up. And as I mentioned in another thread, it's probably best not to breath that air anyway, smell or no smell, so I don't drive with the rear window down in most cases.

I have the same issue in my '04 V8. Does anyone know if there's a TSB to cover that?
I'm sure this isnt safe to breathe in, although the effects would seem to be more long-term than short-term, so the incentive for Toyota to fix it is less. But regardless, the health effects concern me more than the awful smell...

I don't have the TSB handy, but there is one for the 2004. I had it done to mine in 2004 and it made a huge improvement. I only get the smell now with the window open and under WOT.

What do you need to tell them (besides the fact that it smells like ass with the window open) in order to get them to fix it under the TSB?

I just got off the phone with one of the service guys at my dealer, and this is what he told me.....
He said that they could look at my car per the service bulletin, BUT, the problem starts with the gas. He said the 4R's (and a lot of the new cars) have catalytic converters that are much more efficient at trapping and breaking down "other gases". He said the TSB basically "goes backwards in technology" by replacing the catalytic converter with an older style one that is better at eliminating sulfer, but not other gases.
I'm probably not going to do anything about this, at least for now. Again, I only ride with the window down when I have my dog in the back or I am trolling along at slow speeds, like 4 wheel'n.
Alaskaman, keep us posted. I'd like to hear your outcome, especially if you go beyond trying different gas to fix it.
