Tundra 5100 vs 5100s

Hey guys I was wondering what the difference was between the bilstein 5100s for the tundra and I guess the 5100s made for the 4runner. Wheelers offroad has the tundra front shocks for $195 and the regular 5100s for $173, is it worth the extra money?

Tundra 5100s have five notches for adjustability, the other 5100s are tacoma shocks, with only 3 notches. The tundra 5100s can just be fine tuned to the amount of lift you want.

coming from someone who rode motocross/sportbikes, suspension is key. If the weight is off its noticeable??? Not sure how accurate this is the same for vehicles. I would assume that if I put HD shocks from a 3/4 ton on my 4runner it would be noticeable.

ugamurph has the Tundra 5100's on the rear of his runner and he was saying he thinks it's too soft. ugamurph, want to comment on your research?

I have the tundra 5100s front and rear on my 98 limited. Also daystar 1.5 lift in back and middle perch on the front. The ride is softer than I expected. Still nose dives with hard braking, the rear still bottoms out after after speed bumps. Albeit, I didn't replace the springs since there was no sag. They do have 170k miles on them. Have not used them off road yet, since I'm 2 (1) wheel drive.

But tundra 5100 and Tacoma 5100 aren't HD, the yellow bilstein version is HD and if you look some tacomas if not most come with HD. I dont know where but I heard someone say tundra 5100 are same valved as Tacoma just has more precise adjustability. But I'm not 100% on the valving. Still waiting for my front tundra shocks, and the reason why I went with tundra was because of more perchs. By the way I ordered mine if www.thmotorsports.com for about $80 a shock. Now they are $100+......

I paid for 5100 front tundra and rear long travel 5100 ( rear fj cruiser shocks ) $339 with shipping.

Just to clarify. The top and bottom notches are not the same between the two shocks. Tundra 5100 on the right and tacoma on the left. The 2nd notch from the bottom on the tundras is equivalent to the bottom notch on the tacoma 5100s.

Interesting, if you were to run eibachs coils with Tacoma 5100 and leave it on very bottom setting you should be sitting at 3" in front. Since eibachs are rated at 3" lift.

Now people here say if you run tundra 5100 and eibach coils and leave the tundra 5100 on second perch ( equal to tacomas first perch) people say they get 3.25" of lift in the front.

How so of second perch on tundra is equal to first one on Tacoma ? Or am I just talking out of my a**? Very curious.

im confused ,in doing research here on the forum i get a mixed bag of answers regarding this situation .i got the impression that its not recommended to clip up the shock pre-load with the use of the Eibach 620 springs. but also its never clarified when using a tundra shock or tacoma shock body its just called 5100's.in the reading i have done i always assumed they meant tundra shock body ,but i know some are running the rcd tacoma 5100's combo as well .im also curious as to whats recommended regarding perch settings between the two ?

Bottom setting for tacoma (RCD) 5100s, and 2nd notch on the Tundra 5100's. The bottom setting of the tundra shocks will not give you 3" of lift with the Toytec eibach springs.

But tundra bilstein 5100 on 2nd perch with EIBACHS will give you 3.25 "?

Because on toytec site it says eibachs provide 3" of lift. So theoretically if you run tacoma 5100 on bottom perch with eibachs it should be equal to 3" of lift as nothing is being raised. But now if tundras 5100 second perch is equal to tacomas first perch then theoretically it should also be at 3" with eibachs. But here people say it provides 3.25", tundra 5100/eibachs.

I'm waiting to get my shocks. The back will have superflex coils. So at what setting should you set tundra 5100/eibachs to have little take but not to Much. ( I was told second perch )

I plan on running the front eibachs and normal 5100s what perch should I set for three inches of lift, also I am going to have 8 wrap Lc coils in the rear and long travel 5100s

Thanks Snowrunner ! so here's why I ask , I just installed mine over the weekend on the first perch giving me a 23" hub to fender when i was done .But i think after driving on them a bit and the suspension settles i think will end up more like 22.5 and roughly 1.25" of rake from front to back with 890's .i'm looking for a little less rake . i was surprised that when i removed my stock 4runner coils that i had clipped up on setting 4 on tundra 5100's my truck was basically the same height or maybe + 1/4" with the new Eibach coils. i would really like the truck closer to level or like a 1/2 to 3/4 " of rake i think would look good for me .thanks for taking the time to photo the two next to each other for comparison and pointing out this small but important detail.

Every vehicle is going to be slightly different. I'm sure you can find someone that will tell you the 112-620's and D558's yielded 3.25" of lift also. There are too many factors that effect final ride hight. A quarter of an inch is so marginal it could be that the person's measurement was off. It could be that they never loosened their long UCA bolt to relax the bushings after the ride height changed. Or it could just be weight differences from vehicle to vehicle.

You shouldn't see much difference, if any between the two shocks with the tundras set on the 2nd setting and the tacos set on the bottom. If I were you I'd run the front on the 2nd setting with Eibachs to match the superflex springs in the back. On the bottom you would have a good amount of rake.

No problem. And if you want to get just a little more height you can always add one of these to each side:

Front Top Plate Spacer (One - 1/4")

So 2nd perch tundra 5100/eibachs will be good with superflex in the rear and it should have little rake right ??

I actually just got done adjusting my 5100's up one perch (since my last post earlier, lol) to put it on the the second and i am super STOKED ! to say the least .it raised the truck to almost level with maybe a 1/2" of rake so now it's hardly noticeable, and it looks great ! also installed my diff drop . i bought a inexpensive hydraulic spring compressor trying to keep safety in mind ,thinking that a heavier rate spring might be a little much for the threaded clasp kind.well it was a toss up ,the hydraulic was a bit sketchy to use as well.seems that the bottom coil isolator doesn't want to sit flat on the compressor perch due to the factory angle of the bilstein bottom isolator, not letting the shock body sit straight up and down .blah blah blah .its still a little sketchy but in a different (rip your face off,not your arm)sort of way ,IMO.but requires less tools and is quicker .i had to put that GIANT POS together before i could start so it took me a bit .all in all now i am satisfied ,for the time being. sometimes have to question some info i read in order not to get pointed in the wrong direction. after all you can find someone that says what you want to hear if you look hard enough, but if you read between the lines of opinions its not hard to figure out a tech credible tips or just regurgitated info .Thanks again for your help !
