Tundra Brake Upgrade complete

Did the TBU yesterday and man am I happy I did. What a difference!
I got rid of all the "stopping wobbles" I had. And stops like a champ. Still wants to wobble a bit at 65 but noticably less. Looks like new front end components will be next.

Only trouble I had was the flange on the new caliper where the bolt hole goes through was about 1/16" thinner and the bolt didn't want to tighten on the passenger side. I sprayed a little lube on the bolt then slowly kept workin it through kinda like using a tap & die set. I think it just got boogered up at one time and needed a little push.

Passenger side took about an hour & a half due to the heat and havin to tap out the bolt hole. Drivers side took about 1/2 an hour.
I recommend this upgrade!!

Hmm that's interesting because the only time mine does is at 65mph+ going down I-70. I think I'm just going to get some of those Brembo's and call it good.

It's totally awesome, I have NHT 231mm calipers, EBC greenstuff pads, and brembo rotors.

Hills I used to go down sadly now pose no problem!

I love all the braking power and the brembo rotors I'm sure will contribute to my lack of warpage.

Did you go with the 199 or 231 Tundra Brake Upgrade? Which rims do you have and did you have to do any grinding?

I want to do the TBU but I don't want to grind anything if at all possible. I heard that the 199's will fit with no problems on stock 96-98 rims (the 16 inch six spoke type) but the 231's on stock 96-98 rims will require grinding.
 
I got the 231mm. Stock 16" wheels. Didn't have to grind anything due to my truck having wheel spacers. I did have to trim off the dust shield a bit, not a problem at all.

Sorry no pics. I was too dirty and had too much sweat rollin down my ass to have my camera ready.

What size/ brand wheel spacers do you have?
 
Do you guys know if it's possible to do the TBU with 199mm brakes and not do any grinding or adding spacers to the 16" wheels?

Which 16'' rim do you have? I did the 199mm upgrade on my 98 with the factory 16 inch six spoke wheels and they did not fit without modification. The inside of the rim was making contact with the caliper and I either had the choice of grinding or adding wheel spacers. I added 1/4'' spacers and that fixed the problem.

Yeah I have the six spoke 16" wheels. The same ones you have in your avatar. I am not a big fan of wheel spacers. I was hoping to do the upgrade without having to grind or use wheel spacers. I guess 1/4" spacers aren't bad. Thanks.
 
Can I get some help on what wheels/spacers fit the TBU?

It is unclear to me what is necessary to fit a 199mm or 231mm TBU to a 3rd gen. I have a '98 base model, with 15" wheels.

The fitment issue appears to be that the face or vertical plane of the caliper makes contact with the inside of the wheel. So a 16" wheel has plenty of diameter for either 199 or 231mm. To fit, either material has be removed from the caliper, or the wheel must be spaced out from the hub.

From this thread, it appears I need:
a) 16" wheels (I have 6 spoke from CL)
b) 1 1/4" wheel spacers (Wab-Fab are $79 for two) -or-
c) 1/4" spacers (source?) for front wheels only

If I understand correctly, the 1/4" wheel spacers create enough clearance for the calipers, while maintaining the hub-centric fit of the wheel and not stressing the lug studs, because they are relatively thin.

Looking at my current 15" wheels/tires, in the back the outer edge of the tire is about even with the outer edge of the flare/running board. So I think 1 1/4" would stick out more than I would like, past the flare, unless I could find a tire with a smaller section width. But tire choices are rather limited.

I will check in the morning to see if the front has more room for spacers before the wheels would stick out past the fender flares.

Questions for 96743runner: Could you share the source for 1/4" spacers? I haven't measured the wheel studs, but do you still have plenty of threads for the lug nuts to engage?

Would going to a later model Tundra wheel (16 or 17"), and adding spacers to get the correct offset, help matters?

All thats needed to make them fit is 1/4" wheel spacers? I didn't want to grind my rims, but now it might be viable to perform the 231mm brake mod if all I need are wheel spacers :hatsoff:

Gonna call pepboys for pricing

I bought the spacers from a local tire shop near where I did the upgrade (K&J tire). They have a website but I don't know if you could buy them from their site. They were very cheap too, only $10 for a pair.

Yes, I still have plenty of threads for the lug nuts to engage, with the 1/4'' thick wheel spacers.

If you have the same wheels as me, I'm sure that you will need thicker wheel spacers than 1/4''. I did the 199mm upgrade and needed the 1/4'' spacers so you will probably need a thicker spacer to do the 231mm TBU.
