Tundra brake upgrade Pads WTF?

I am looking oat RockAuto rotors, calipers, pads, likely going Raybestos coated remans with pads, and Raybestos or Brembo rotors.

But looking at the different pads I would say over half of them are chamfered at the leading and trailing edge, this sacrifices maybe 15% or more of the potential
braking surface area of the pads. Looking at FleaBay some Toyota boxed pads (real or fake) are chamfered and some are not.

Is this an anti squeak thing? I would rather have all the pad contact I can get.
And why at the trailing edge, do we care going in reverse, or is this to make them Right and Left compatible either side I guess.

Just puzzled why some pads are continuously flat and others are steeply tapered at the front and rear edges.

To complicate matters some of the Raybestos pads are chamfered and some not, but the pads with calipers was the cheapest way to get the zinc coated
calipers. Guess I can call RockAuto and ask the part number for the included pads.

I've been shopping for Tundra brake parts on PartsGeek, too, and I believe they also have the Raybestos stuff.

Have never used PartsGeek and thanks for the informative link vis a vis the chamfered edges on the pads. Just checked their website, RockAuto is cheaper for the same stuff, never had a problem returning to RA either. But PG did have some more selections.

A couple kits have extended pad length so there is no sacrifice in pad contact area but many just have the stock pad area and brutally cutaway the edges...seems like reducing braking power too much!

I put Toyota pads for a 05 Tundra on, they were not chamfered and I like them quite a bit, no noise, vibration chattering, etc.

I’m in the middle of Tundra caliper install and haven’t decided on pads yet. I will post what I decide on and see how they do.

RA states that the core parts returned must be from the same type of vehicle, but I'd have 4 Runner parts though I ordered Tundra parts. And, I'd need to pay to ship the cores back to RA in Chicago. I don't know how much that might be but two brake calipers will not be lightweight. So, whatever the published price of the parts, add shipping.
If someone knows if RA is real strict, or not, on these policies, it would be hear about it.

Just go OEM Toyota for the pads. They are better pads anyway and last longer.

RA states that the core parts returned must be from the same type of vehicle, but I'd have 4 Runner parts though I ordered Tundra parts. And, I'd need to pay to ship the cores back to RA in Chicago. I don't know how much that might be but two brake calipers will not be lightweight. So, whatever the published price of the parts, add shipping.

I'll let you know when I send in my 4Runner caliper cores to RA for my Tundra rebuilts next week. They're so rusted I doubt they have value as cores anyway, but here's hoping!

I had the same concern when I sent my 4Runner calipers back as cores for the Tundra calipers. I got the refund with no issues, so I'm guessing you'll be fine. They're different, obviously, but who cares, they'll be rebuilt anyway.

As for core shipping, I think I used the label that Rockauto provided as an option, it was very cheap (like $17?).

I sent mine back to Rock Auto and did NOT receive a core refund. I had read on here that some people had, so I thought of it as a gamble, but I lost. I suppose it just depends on who opens the box. :noidea:

It’s probably worth noting:

Friction force is not a function of surface area.

All things being equal, a pad with chamfered edges will have exactly the same stopping power as an unchamfered pad.

That is a sad tale and I would not want that to happen to me. If there isn't some way to be assured that my core charge would come back to me, I will shop elsewhere.

I've noticed the OEM pads with "A" at the end of the part # are chamfered. The A is for alternate. These are budget priced OEM pads to compete with parts stores. They are crap. They make tons of noise and some dealers stopped selling them completely due to customer complaints. Go the correct OEM pads and shims. Get the TRD pads if you want a bit more stopping power.

Because your average guy in receiving doesn't know the difference between a 4Runner caliper and a Tundra caliper They didn't when I sent mine back to Rockauto... but I was prepared for them to reject it.
