Tundra brake upgrade question?

Ok thanks guys just wanting to know. So if i buy a 17inch wheel they would fit no problem then right? since the tundras do have 17inch wheels?

Right. But they also fit with the 16" 5 Stars. (assuming it's the 231 Tundra kit). The 199 kit will fit with the Split Spokes.

Not necessarily^. It's not the diameter of the wheel that matters (any 16s or 17s will clear the Tundras that way). But the Tundra calipers stick out past the mounting flange on the hub, so if the other mounting flange (on the wheel itself) is too close to the inside face of the wheel, the face will hit the caliper before it's sitting flat on the flange. Hope that makes sense.

Another option is to just run wheel spacers with 3 spokes. They will push the inside face of the rim away from the caliper.

Ok Brian so your saying that it will fit depending on my backspaceing on the wheel? Another thing i could get 1" wheel spacers and be fine either way right?

It's not really the BSing. BSing is how far the inside edge (not face) of the wheel is from the mounting flange of the wheel. For instance, I have 4" BS on my Cragars (which you'd think would clear the Tundras just fine since they stick out 5/8" more than stock wheels), but they don't clear the Tundras without spacers because the inside face of that wheel is still too close.

ok i get it now. Thanks. so i would be better off just buying a set of spacers then it sounds like.

Probably the 231 set going as big as i can. Want more stopping power lol. another thing is i dont have to upgrade any brake lines or anything do i?

No line upgrade, just the calpiers, pads and rotors. I used the 5 spoke 99 and up wheels to clear mine. Worked great and they look better than my old corroded 97 wheels anyway.

Yea well i like the 3 spoke split wheel and mine are in perfect condition except for the center caps lol. So id like to keep my factory wheels.

You'll have to shave down the inside of the wheel to use them. Go with either the 5 stars or some 17" Tundra, Sequioa wheels. Or go with the 199 kit and keep your wheels.

I was able to fit 231s on my 96 with 3 spoke wheels and 1/4" spacers. Close, really close, but it worked. The thing I didn't like is the spacers took up too much thread so I got 1" adapters (also going for more room between the 33" tires and a-arm). Much better!

To fix up your center caps use some steel wool on them to ditch what's left of the old paint, then spray paint them. Works and looks great.

Thanks for the advice on the center caps. Any idea what color to use. i mean theres alot of silvers out there?

I think I used 'aluminum' colored paint on my 3 spoke caps and I know I used Dupli-Color import auto spray 8800511 platinum on my Land Cruiser caps 'cause that's what the great guy I bought them from gave me. Not a perfect match but both looked fine to me, especially the 3 spoke caps as they were patchy and ugly. You could take a cap in and match it as close as you can....

Also- I have the same trim pieces as you. Your tires aren't as wide as mine but keep in mind that if you use a spacer it (obviously) moves the wheel out and therefore the tire- it may stick out from the fender a little. I don't think it'd be enough to worry but you'd have to be your own judge of that.

1/4 spacers will work- but its a real pita because you loose that much thread on your studs- I hate mine lol.. if you wanna run the 231s you'd be better off to switch wheels. you can pick up the 5 stars cheap, all you'll need to do is trim the dust shield and they'll fit. vs the 3 spokes your gonna have to either grind the rim or the caliper. Or just get the 199s if your set on those wheels.

yea i don't really care about them sticking out from the fender because that just means i get throw mud all up the side of the truck then lol. So is there really a difference between the 231's and 199's besides the size of the rotor and caliper? i mean both will be bigger than our factory 4runner brakes.
