Tundra brake upgrade w/ 15" wheels???

Hello, new guy here...buying my first T4R on Tuesday. Sorry if this has been discussed before but I couldn't find it;

I see the common fix for the horrendous braking is the Tundra brake upgrade, but is it true the 15" wheels don't have the clearance for it? If not, anyone have suggestions for a better performing brake setup? The one I'm buying needs brake work- soon. Thanks guys :cheers:

pretty much, yes 15s will not work, you might be able to use some spacers, but i still think they will rub. just buy a set of 16 wheels, in the long run you will be happy you did, at this point there are way more options in wheels for 16s vs 15s and the braking performance will totally make it worth it, even if you just get some steel wheels like the crager soft 8s. liker hepar has...

Thanks for the advice, but I'll be stretching my budget as is with new rotors and pads. :ybrick:

Know if they make slotted rotors or the like with original specs, that are worth a damn?

they do but slotted rotors arent that great... unless you plan on racing... but what ever you do dont buy drilled rotors. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/89564-confused-brake-upgrade.html there that was the most recent debate over drilled rotors and it kinda covers slotted as well, though slotted are not as prone to cracking or breaking as drilled they can be weaker than a standard disc if you dont get good quality like power slot or some of the other name brands. dont buy lifetime pads they are harder and dont dissipate heat well and they will chew up rotors fast, so if you are gonna stay stock then get softer pads, pads are cheap enough compaired to rotors and you can change pads in like 10-15 min.

Tundra brakes will not fit with 15s, they barely fit with 16s.

If you do not have the money to upgrade to larger rims and big brakes, then stick with stock, especially if you drive off road. Slotted rotors trap debris that gouges your rotors.

Drilled, forget it.

Go turn those rotors and get some Raybestos pads, or similar. They will help to dissipate heat, although don't expect a miracle.

If it helps, i too have 15" wheels. I just did my pads and rotors with Raybestos pro grade stuff and im very happy with the braking power and smoothness. A huge improvement overall. I would HIGHLY suggest getting some calipers from your local auto store, i got mine for $64 a piece after turning in my cores. I finished the driver side fine, with some struggle with rusted bolts. Then the passenger side came and i was slamming on a punch with a hammer trying to remove the pins holding the pads on. Snap, there goes a whole chunk of my caliper. So i ended having to buy both and just do both.

Spray your caliper bolts with penetrating before hand! Seriously! And be prepared with a torch and a long bar to slide over a wrench. Also, turning your wheel makes it ten times easier to work on the bolts.

IH8MUD has a Tires and wheel section that I bought a set of LC wheels for $250.

you can normally pick up a set of stock 16's for a decent price. slap some paint on there and you have new rims.

I would sell my stockers, but plan on keeping them for now.

save up for the rims and brakes. will pay off in the end.

Yeah I'm about 90 percent sure i'll just get some high end OEM rotors and pads. Bah :violin:
