Tundra brake upgrade

Hello all. I have been hearing a lot about tundra brake upgrades for the 4runner.
I have a 2015 4runner trail edition. I am still using stock rims . How much work is involved and what are the benefits of the upgrade? I do have shrockworks front and rear bumpers plus a dual battery setup with agm batteries.

It's a lot of work on a 5th gen. You'll need custom upper and lower control arms and a tundra spindle or a custom spindle to run tundra unit bearings. Then you'll need custom axle shafts to adapt from the 4runner diff to the tundra spindle assembly. And then new wheels. Plus a new rear axle to match the new 5 lug front wheel pattern. All in all I'd say $15k should get you there.


(That was a joke ^ . The Tundra has 5 lug wheels. The 4runner has larger brakes than the old tundra conversion brakes people used to swap. The 4Runner brakes are already big. No reason to put bigger brakes on than an a 4Runner than an F250 unless it's just for some psychological issue that makes you feel safer. There's no utility, but maybe you'll feel safer. For reference to compare to other vehicles the 4Runner front brakes are 338mm diameter and 32mm thick. )

You were hearing about previous generations of 4runner that could upgrade to the old 6 lug Tundra brakes. Take a look at the spacing between the front calipers and the inside of the 17" wheels - you're not going any larger without moving up to a larger diameter wheel.

Thanks guys/gals for the replies. Just asked not for safety but to make my brake pads and rotors last longer. Will just use premium parts for the 4runner.

Beware your last statement. Most "Performance/Premium" pads will wear much faster than the OEM compound. I've experienced this with PowerStop and TRD pads now. Neither lasted anywhere near as long as straight Toyota OEM's, and any additional "performance" was really not worth the reduced service interval IMNSHO...
