Tundra coils

I may have the chance to buy some tundra coils/top hats. They are the yellow/yellow and blue/yellow versions. The "ones that work on 4Runners".

After extensive research, I have not been able to confirm the following:

How much lift do they provide, when used on a stock 4Runner shock?

Do I HAVE to grind down the steering knuckles as seen here Gen 3 Toyota 4Runner Trail Suspension, Part 1: Off-Road.com

I recently installed adjustable 5100's and I'm essentially trying to find out if they will seat themselves correctly on the shock, and which setting I should use for a 3 inch lift. With my stock coils, I get 2 1/4 inches of lift from the 5100's set on the top level.

around 2" by themselves and i didnt grind the knuckles at all and had no issues whatsoever. im running adjustable 5100's along with tundra coils
 
ive got the Tundra 5100's in the middle clip and center hub to bottom of front fender measures just under 24" if that helps any
 
In my experience they do not ride well on the stock 4runner shocks. You should get the Tundra bilstein 5100's or another Tundra based shock. The shocks you have been to soft for the Tundra springs according to many people.

The guy selling the Tundra parts was fairly knowledgeable, and is actually a 4Runner guy that collected parts to do mods.

"The diameter of the 4Runner perch is about half an inch less than the Tundra's. You could probably make it "work", but it wouldn't work-work. I believe the shock bodies are the same, though, so all you'd need to do is score the bigger perches (if Bilstein would sell 'em separately)."

So it looks like my issue would be that the coil wouldn't seat correctly on the shock perch.

If anyone is looking for Tundra coils/shocks, I can put you in touch with a guy that has some.
 
Just a question.......If you already have the coils, why not just spend the extra money for Tundra struts? The coils are the most expensive part of the assemblies.......

is he selling both assembled? like coils and struts for the front?

I don't have the coils yet, what I have are stock coils (not the high ones) with Bilstein 5100 adj. that are for a Tacoma.

The lift I have with that is 2 1/4 or so. If I put on the Tundra strut/shock assembly, I would have about 1.5-2 inches of lift. I really didn't want to go lower, and I just had the 5100's installed a week ago.

It was just happenstance that I was selling some 5 star wheels, and this guy offered to trade me the Tundra assemblies. I was going to run the Tundra coils on my Tacoma 5100's...but as we found out it wont work.

The plan was to get 2 inches out of the Tundra coils, and have the 5100's on the middle setting for a total lift of 3.25 inches.

That's what was goin through my head :biggrin2:
 
With the Tundra TRD coils and bilstien shocks I'm at I'm at 37.5" from the bottom of the tire to the bottom lip of the fender. Rollin on 265/75/16 BFGs. Oh and I have the 3/4" top spacer from toytec. The rear is at 38.5" with OME 890s.
I'm going to swap out the 890s with 906s today since I'm not happy with the rake. I might put some 10mm trim packers in the rear.

Are those the "Tundra" bilsteins?

I'm also at 37.5 in the front with my stock coils, and 5100's on the top setting. No spacers. * (265/75/16)

Yup, Tundra bilsteins. I'll measure from the hub to the top later on today. I'm also getting an alignment today.
 
quick thread related question, I am looking to do a lift and was wondering would any 2000-2006 tundra coils work up front or do they have to be a tundra TRD version? Would I be able to use these coils with stock struts in the front? Also, if I go with LC coils in the back, will I need to install new struts as well? What type of lift should I expect with LC coils in the rear (with lowest number of wraps) and Tundra Coils in front? I have read alot of threads and I am getting conflicting numbers so just need alot of help! Thanks in advance.

My 4runner has 170,XXX miles and is 2WD. I don't want a HUGE lift, just 2-3inchs. Thanks again!!

If you want a mild lift go with this.
Front
-TRD tundra coils and bilstein shocks up front with toytec's 3/4" top spacer.
Rear
What ever shocks. 906 OMEs with 10mm trim packer on both sides.

It'll probably give you a 2" lift and it'll be level.
 
Just swapped everything out.

Front TRD Tundra coils with toytec 3/4" top spacer. Bilstein stock.
Before:
FL: 37.25"/22.75"
FR: 37.25"/22.75"
After:
FL: 37"/22.5"
FR: 37.25"/22.75"

Rear
Before: OME 890
LR: 38"/23.125"
RR: 38.50"/23.75"
After: OME 906 with 10mm trim packer on each side
LR: 37.50"/22.50"
RR: 37.75"/23"

for the front, does it have to be a TRD tundra or can it just be a regular tundra? I am asking because I used car-parts.com and found a couple of em in Houston for $200 a pair (non-TRD tundra). Also, do you know where I can find used 906s? I know toytec sells them but they are $$$ and I've search classifieds and still nothing. thanks in advance

Yes you want the TRD coils. Just make sure they have the y/y y/b markings on them. They came from an access cab TRD. If you check car-parts.com you can find them cheaper. I got some for 155 (the people screwed me over with the price should have been 115).
