Turbo 4Runners?

So I'm new to this but I noticed some of them say they are Turbo 4Runners. What kind of turbo are they running, is it stock form, or something added after the fact?

I'm going to do some searches on the subject, so forgive me if I am asking a question already asked, but I figured I'd put it up here in case someone can help me shorten the process.

I've never heard of a turbo in a 1st Generation.

However...I heard of some people put Chevy V8s in them.

If you can slam a Z06 Corvette V8 6.0L in there...that would super awesome.

I am not certain but I thought I saw a couple in the 1st gen picture thread. Thanks for replying, I wonder how the engine would handle adding a turbo. That could be a fun project huh?

The factory turbo boosted the 2.4 by 33 lb/ft of torque and 19 hp. What I'd really like to see is the digital dash package it mentions you could get with the Turbo, I wonder if it looks like the Atari style dash in my '88 Vette

Thanks! So I wasn't hallucinating. I am hoping this 4R I am going to look at tomorrow works out. If it does I think I'll want to add a Turbo at some point.

That site is nice for a quick overview of the changes with each model year I really appreciate that link.

I see a lot of 85's for sale and also people wanting them, not sure why over the slightly younger models. Maybe the site will give some insight.

That's because '85 was the last year for the solid front axle which is favored by hard core offroaders

Toyota didn't simply slap a turb on a 22RE, they did a major rework of the engine to make the 22RTE. Stronger block, different pistons, cam, injectors.

It's actually the same block with some additional machining and the same cam from the factory. The injectors are 295cc peak and hold as compared to the 250 ish cc saturated injectors on the RE. Pistons are dished and the head has a larger combustion chamber to lower compression. The only other major difference I can think of is the ECU. It is entirely possible to convert a RE to a turbo in many ways. You swap pistons and head, ECU, change injectors, fab an oil feed/drain and slap on a manifold with turbo. Or just simply slap on a turbo and count down the minutes to self destruct.

Hey cool, it's a fun project to undertake. Some guys have pushed 250 HP on these little 4 bangers but that will take more time and money than most of us are willing to shell out.
If I were you I would keep an eye out for a turbo truck or 4runner that you could pull the motor out of and rebuild. It is much nicer to start out with a fresh RTE with the intake, exhaust, ECU and injectors in hand. It is not mandatory as you can build your RE up to handle some boost, you just have to be more carefull as your compression is already much higher and you will have tune very carefully.
Another interesting idea that is catching on more is running propane with a turbo..you can read more about that on the 22rte-trucks board.
