Turbo Charging A 4th Gen?????????

Hey all, i am a new owner of a 04 sport with the V6 and am wondering since TRD hasnt come out with a superchager for our trucks yet. Has anyone heard or thought about putting a turbo charger on it. Not a huge one or anything, just something that you can run about 6-10 pounds of boost, put a chip in it and re-program all the usual things. Something that i like with the turbo is that in daily driving the gas millage isnt going to be affected much if anything from what ive studied up on it will prolly help with gas. Just wondering if it can be done or would anyone even do it. Im going to get my first oil change (3000 miles) and will ask the service manager, but was just curious if anyone knows???/:awais:

Theres a company working on it

The 4.0 is going in the tacoma and they have a really really kick ass on for the 3.4, so there going to design it for the Runner and the Coma.

I can't find it but I think its sts turbo, i don't have time to search but I'll post it when I find it.

Nevermind

I found it, I'll get one when they come out as long as the runner doesn't hve more than 40,000 miles on it, I think it makes up to 12lbs of boost. I've got a friend with a tacoma on it back in florida, definately makes more power easier than the supercharger, I had personally never heard of a remote mount but it works out great:)

Dude, the sound of that turbo on the Tundra is awesome. I'll have to keep an eye on STS to see if they make a 4Runner kit...
 
The only problem with this, if you ever plan to go off roading, that turbo charger is not mounted in a very good place, (near your exhaust), but if you stay only on road, go right ahead

But they mount it in a good spot, just before the curve for the rear axle. It would be very easy to add a skid to that location.

I am going to talk to them in the morning and ask if they have something in the works for the 4.0, im sure they will since the new Coma will have it. I will let everyone know what they say> This is just what i was looking for, thanks vandert for the link. Thats why i love this site so much, b/c there is always going to be someone out there that knows something about something!

Good luck, they will support it, exspecially if you tell them there are other Runner's interested. I will buy it, but it will be at least a year and a half. I'm going for a commission in the military, I'm currently an NCO but I want more, I need 7 classes to complete my degree, and thats where my funds are going right now, books, the school is paid for, but the books are pricey. After I get the commission the Turbo will go on:)

Let me know what the timeframe is, the cool thing about this is it's already worked out, they would just have to make the return pipes a little different.

Did you watch the video's of the trucks in action, pretty crazy stuff. I love the fact that I can have headers, and a turbo, I can't get over that,

I sent an email to them asking about support for the V8 4runner guys. I am sure that would be able to modify there existing kits for the 4runner's. Heck it would be even easier for both the V6 and V8 guys since we share the same exhaust, correct? Anyway, I'm excited about that. I hope we get it!!

I don't know, It would theroetically be possible but it would be right after your split for the exhaust, however it would take the turbo far longer to spool, I don't think they would be willing to sell it to the Borla equiped Runners just because of that, they want to sell there performance and fast spool times, ie. no turbo lag, and with only one exhaust pipe feeding it and so far back it wouldn't be recommended, you could split the exhaust after it with no problems though, but I don't think the borla would really work. You'd have to ask them though.

One would think

Evidentaly they have it worked out through the use of "some" backpressure, you will have to explore the site, they explain it pretty well. I will definately buy it in the future, its worth it. I'm in the process of turbocharging my little VW right now. I'm getting a TDI setup and mating it to my little 8v, will be a fun project and fairly cheap too. Turbo's are fun, superchargers are great too, but turbo's have them beat on the sound.

Yeah i Did!

Hey vandert, yeah i watched the videos. I watched every single clip that the site had on it. My favorite is the Z71 in the tunnel. MAN that truck hauls ass. I can not wait to eat up some Z28 after i put that turbo on. :flipoff: I bet its going to make that 4.0 245hp into prolly like 320 or something around that. I just cant wait to pull up to a sports car and either beat it or hang REAL close. Ill let you know when they relpy to my email.

I sent them an email on Sunday night, and am still awaiting a response. Maybe they will see a trend here! I too would shell out the 4-5k to get one today, although I would hate to lose the Borla exhaust.
 
If you use your 4Runner off road and do water crossings, you may want to reconsider this as an option unless they will warranty it for such situations.

Doesn't water get into your engine with the filter mounted down low?
No, even under very wet conditions the filter sheds most all water. Every kit includes a K&N PreCharger which is a "sock" that protects the filter under very dusty or wet conditions. The only thing you don't want to do is completely submerge the filter. This would draw water through the filter and into the intake tubing. For most vehicles that would mean you would have water coming in your doors before you'd have a problem with the turbo's air filter.

If water hits the hot turbo, will it crack?
Seems like it might when you first think about it, however, when I asked the Garrett engineers this questions they just laughed. There is a big difference in water splashing on a hot turbo and submerging it in enough water and fast enough to really cool it down fast. Both the new turbocharged Vette systems and the new Porsche systems sit the turbo down low and exposed to water and anything else that goes under a car.
