Turbo or Smog??

I'm planning on putting a turbo engine into my 4runner that originally has a 22REC engine.

Does anyone have any idea about smog issues? I'm going to go with the assumption that once the turbo is installed I won't be able to pass smog regulations (CA).

Where would I find this info?

Are you putting a turbo or a supercharger on the existing engine or a complete engine swap? If you are putting a bolt on to your exisiting engine I believe they are all 50 states smog/emissions legal.

That's good news. I found an engine today that I can swap with the one I've got now.

I'm going to swap a 1986 22REC with a 1985 22
The 22REC is fuel injected while the '85 isn't... I'm just going to swap the parts that I need....

Then comes the turbo... if emissions will allow it, adding the turbo to my already existing engine would work fine. I'm sure I'd have to install a cooler too.....

Hi. I am not that familiar with California laws, but in most emission states they use the "Emissions Bible" (or at least they are suppose to) which tells them what emission control devices are factory installed. I.e. EGR valve, cat. converter, evap. sys., 02 sensor, coolant temp sensor, etc...

As long as these components are present and working you shouldn't have to much to worry about being it's the same size engine. If it were one that was produced for a different vehicle (say a 4.7L) they might question that. It being that it is fuel injected you will need to install the ECM(computer) to manage the fuel system and emission control devices. What comes out of the exhaust pipe should be the same as the car you removed it from, gas reading wise that is. Their is a label under the hood with the installed components listed. Some are coded so you may or may not be able to tell exactly what you need unless you have the "Bible" to decifer the codes.

well i was looking into rice rockets for awhile and now i am stuck on stupid with these 4runners (1st gen)


anyways here is the break down the engine must be the same year or newer and you must keep all the smog junk from the replacemnt engine inclduing computer ......then the fun part to be legal you have to go see a state referee....thstd the short version but good luck
