So I am not sure if this is the correct forum, but I couldnt find a forced induction forum.

I am looking at the cx racing kit here
cxracing.com: CXRacing Turbo Kit Manifold Downpipe for 95-04 Tacoma 5VZFE 5VZ-FE 5VZ

i want to pick up my own turbo, hopefully used on craigs or other forums,
but I havent a clue exactly what I need. I know i need t4 flange, the "gt35" listed with the kit I have heard likely has a little too slow of a spool to fit with the 4runner use. it should spool around 3k.

I am looking for closer to 2200-2500 k spool. I am ok with giving up some top end and extreme power as 300+ hp is more than sufficient for this truck and what I do in in. but 3k spool for towing sounds like a chore.

a the same time I dont want the power to fall on its face at 5k rpm.

I understand all the mechanicals of turbo charging, but the a/r ratios are dumbfounding to me.

please help. I have seen a few on craigs. but they all seem directed at extreme high hp numbers and high rpm drag cars.

1996 - 5speed trans, 4x4, 3.4.

thanks in advance.

doesn't sound like it. A small T3/T4 turbo would be perfect. A turbo that would spool at 3k under normal driving would spool much faster under a heavier load such as pulling a trailer. You can't confuse the fact that a turbo spools at a certain RPM vs. the amount of engine load it takes to get it to the spooling point. Your best bet is a turbo that does well in the lower RPM range, such as right off idle. Because of this, it'll need to be small, which means it will be inefficient in the upper RPM's. Why do you need/want something that will still be efficient at 5,000+RPM?

I dont know where you heard the spool would be? You know someone running this kit on our trucks? 3k spool is not bad. I have ran super small turbo charged cars and spool is usually full by 3-3500k. Diesel motors get spool around 1800-2500k but thats with there crazy compression ratios. You wont get that with our vehicles.

The hx35 holset turbo is a very fast spooling turbo that has a t4 flange and would bolt up. It is the stock turbo on cummings diesel motors and they spool super fast and are almost indestructable. If I built our truck for a turbo I would run that or even a smaller version like hx30 if it has a t4 flange.

In your case if you buy the kit the problem is not the size of the turbo but that its chinese junk that will blow up or crack down the road anyways. With out big motor anything small will spool fast. If you want low end tq get the supercharger.

Usually when I am running competition hill in mexico I find it is steep enough that 2nd gear is no power-bog and sink situation. 1st gear im at the rev limiter, I assume that turbo would make this particular run perfect i second gear.

the only thing I have read thus far was another post discussing thius kit, and a poster(who certainly seemed knowledgeable) mentioned that this turbo that comes with the kit is likely a tad large and wouldn't spool till 3k or later.

I have no interest in changing gears.

i feel like the gt35 is better for street cars looking to pull hard to redline every shift, placing them right back at 3k rpm after shift. im really looking more for a 2k spool, if it doesnt pull HARD all the way to redline, i dont really care. but i dont want the power falling off dramatically at 5000k. I know it is a balance. i have always heard holset turbos spool late and hit hard. but I would love to find something that came stock on another car.

I know this is old but any updates?

There's a lot more turbo builds over on www.customtacos.com. Tacomas obviously are different as far as the body goes, but have similar engines. You'll find turbo builds more common on 4 cylinders though due to having more room in the engine bay and the lack of a supercharger kit.

My daughter wanted me to put this here: :baby:.

Thanks, I'm honestly just trying to figure out what turbo i need for a rear mount on a 96 4runner. Hoping to spool around that 3k Mark.
