Turbo?

Okay, all you turbo guys...if I wanted to put a turbo on a N/A 22re engine...are there any concerns? My buddy & I are thinking of doing a complete rebuild on the engine in the Runner (scrapping the idea of going w/ a turbo diesel) & going w/ a turbo. Should we use a different head, different injectors? Of course, if I am dumping $$$ in this project, I would like for it to be right so if I even need to start with a different engine than the one I have, I'd rather do that than have something that isn't right. Just looking for good reliability & some power upgrade as well. My buddy said that we will probably just run w/ 6 lbs of boost. Anyway, you guys know much more than I. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, if you're going to go ahead and put money into it. check this page out
Part Listing - LC Engineering, Inc. (GUEST-Contact) -

This is LC Engineering, they are expensive, but the best IMO. I've seen firsthand what their engines can do (buddy has one in his Pickup, it's insanely fast).

If you don't have their kind of money to spend, I suggest taking the heads to a reputable machine shop, and get the heads ported and polished, and gasket-matched. Having the heads Milled to accept FEL-PRO LOCWire gaskets wouldn't hurt either. They have a raised metal ring around each cylinder to prevent the head gasket from blowing out under boost.

Another alternative is that there apparently is a 22RE that came FACTORY Turbocharged, I've never seen one, but there has to be parts for it.... Maybe get one of their heads to start with as a base.

If all you're wanting to do is run 6lbs of boost then look around on ebay or 22-rtetrucks.com and find some stock ct-20 components. For a few hundred bucks in used stock components you can get your 6 lbs of boost and be safe on your stock motor.

Your head doesn't need any milling for that boost. The 22re is the same block as the 22rte, the head is a little different (less compression in the 22rte head) but you can use the 22re head. The injectors and the ecu are different though.

The hardest thing in this dierction is finding everything that is in decent condition. I would suggest either you have a reputable shop build you an exhaust header or buy one from the dealership. If you buy one from the dealership you'll spend about $280 for it. Between the used turbo, oil lines, water lines, injectors, and ecu you're probably looking at another $500 +/- depending on what kind of deals you can get.

Even if you go to a stock configuration you're probably going to spend upwards of $700-$800. If you go aftermarket and get more boost you're looking at a few grand easily. I would suggest going to stock setup if you're serious about keeping low boost at 6 lbs because the ct-20 is setup for 7lbs max.

I would highly reccomend that you go with a turbo head casting, you are going to have a hard time tuning that thing on pump gas with that much compression. Pre combustion + boost = one dead 22re really fast.
If you can find a stock turbo manifold from the dealer at $280 then that would be the deal of the decade, they used to go for $600 from the dealer. One thing I will warn you about is the CT-20 is an enormous pile of junk, go with a CT-26 from a late 80's turbo supra. It will bolt up to the stock manifold with a little hole slotting on the turbo and will hold up a lot better than a CT-20 could ever dream of.
There are a lot of little details that go into making your plan work in regards to reliability, check out 22RTE-Trucks.com for the complete lowdown.

I was looking at that before but doesn't the ct-26 put out too much boost for the stock ecu and injectors?

It moves more air than a CT-20 but like all turbos, it can be regulated to whatever psi you want via the wastegate.

Guys, thanks for the tips. I will check that link & see what we may need for the project. If the CT-26 is a reliable, economical way to go...that may be the best route.
