If you're into poppin bottles of Cristal, then you're going to have to invest in a custom setup. Real custom. But if you're more of Keystone Light kind of guy, you can always make one yourself :artist:

Otherwise, the only other option you have is to go for the supercharger. TRD made one and all its components are more readily available than any turbo setups unfortunately

Yes, you have the 3.4L V6. If you want to go turbo, I hope you have at least $10k to spend, if not more.

im just wondering why you would want to spend that much $$ on such an old vehicle, especially an SUV? If you want something fast, and turbocharged, go with a sports car(supra, rx7,DSM) The turbo 4runner wont be worth any more with the turb set up. at least if you buy a supra or rx7, you can recoup a little of the $$ that you invested(thrown away)

Your dreams come true!

You could go with a Squires system. I found out about them while I was living in Utah a few years ago. Pretty popular with some lifted Tacos in the area while I was there.
Here you go:

From what I remember they were about 4 grand for everything. That is very competitive with the S/C, if not cheaper and easier to maintain.

Has anyone ever had any experience with these remote turbos?

Wow that is incredible. But i do have to wonder if the fuel delivery system has to be upgraded like the supercharger because they are both doing relatively the same thing. And i also wonder if the stock cpu can handle a turbo set up. If it was just a simple install I might just have to get one.

that turbo kit has some major room for improvement .....no reason for the compromises they made, especially since its in a relatively open engine bay.

to the original poster where are you located?

I was running a one off turbo set-up on my 99 4runner untill last December. I broke a rod running 14 lbs, rebuilt the motor, and am now back to stock. There are no off the shelf kits for traditional set-ups, only the STS kit which leaves some to be desired. However, a one-off kit is expensive and time consuming - alot of trial and error. Plus, if something breaks, you are at the mercy of your fab guy to get things done which can lead to alot of downtime.

It did have alot of power though and was a blast to drive. However, I am going back to the trd S/C or might try and fab up a rotrex set-up as alot of my turbo parts would swap over with some modification. If you are just getting into FI, I would say go with the TRD S/C.

The Rotrex would be cool to see, i've been very impressed w/ the HKS version used in the 350z/G35 kit. Not quite a Rotrex blower, but its about a 99% copy so i imagine the real is just as good.

How can you say that the turbo kit is comprable in price to the s/c? You can get used superchargers for cheap these days. and they make the same, if not more power than the STS kit. Besides you are spending $4k in mods for a $7k vehicle, just doesnt make much sense.

I was just saying that a new STS kit and a new TRD S/C with new fuel management setup would run about the same.

I am not saying there kits are good, just available.

I would go they way of a used S/C like you said because there is so much support and technical info as well as available parts that it would be silly to anything else unless you can setup your own custom turbo from parts you have laying around.

It's not worth spending that kind of money on a car that is not worth that much, like you said.

i can do a custom turbo set up for you, its actually what i do for a living lol, but you would either need to bring the 4runner to the rancho cucamonga area, or find enough people that are interested that i could do the design on mine and just make copies for a few people to do the install themselves or w/ a local shop.

as far as the comments about the sc vs turbo, one thing i haven't heard mentioned is the fact that a turbo set up has the advantage of being easy to intercool. the TRD SC setup can't really be intercooled or aftercooled. While meth/water injection is a good substitute, its still not as good as having both!

Oh yes the STS remote turbo. If you got any kind of miles on the clock you might want to think twice. You also need a test and tune session at a dyno shop just to safe. BOOST=lean although I don't think 4psi of boost would run your fuel cycle duty up to much. The price is what steered me away. good luck

hey stick would you say a mitsubishi eclipse turbo not sure of the trim code but I know they're only good for like 8psi could do the trick in a sts knock off application? also what would you recommend for tuning on these 4runners on boost? chip burn or O2 sensors or what? any help would be great.
