A well known turbo company. They make a kit for the Tacoma's that have the 3.4's.

Turbo is definitely the way to go! Turbo's are great for cruising or spirited driving. Under low throttle modulation, the turbo gently spools and your engine is practically running like stock. In some cases, I noticed better fuel economy gains when I turbocharged my cars in normal cruising.
Now, open up that throttle and let that turbo sing, the spooling sound is enough to give you a hard on and spank the little far can vehicles left and right. With the right turbo, you can always have a **** ton of performance gains just by upping the boost and adding fuel. You keep the engine happy in the Fuel management, lubrication and cooling department, you shouldn't have to worry much about it blowing up.
Then again, the VZs aren't the stoutest engines on earth like Toyota's very own 2JZ engine that can withstand 1,000 horsepower on a stock block with proper fuel deliver and boost.
Superchargers are always engaged. The engine is constantly under stress from the added pulley and the constant boost being shoved down the engine's throat. But the upside of supercharges is instant power on the tap. The 5VZ is pretty torque happy so it's got enough oomph to get the 4Runner out of the hole and the turbo can carry on from there.
Don't build something like this on a budget because something like this built right will certainly give you something very very rewarding when properly done right. Invest in a ball bearing turbo charger, probably a remote mount setup so that way you get about equal pressure from both banks instead of feeding a turbo from a single manifold which could put some high EGT stress to one bank. I'm not a fan of remote mounting, but it's a better option for our tight engine bays.
Since your adding a turbocharger, if you do that is, you'll be needing more oil to feed it and a little bit more pressure out of your oil pump; especially if your doing a remote mount setup. With the right turbo, even 5psi will give you more power than a tiny turbo pushing 10psi. Also, an added benefit to remote mount for the turbo means cooler turbo and under hood temperatures. Having a turbo under the hood adds more heat, but its fine if you got proper cooling.
Buy an aluminum radiator with a higher capacity to keep the engine very cool. Also, it will be wise to invest in a trans cooler. Good luck, I'll be watching to see your decision.

LOL, no to insult those with the SC but it is not as powerful as your comment implies. I don't think you will be in any danger of -not being able to maintain rear tire traction- do to the power.
I have always heard great things about the SC but it is a very large investment that could be as much as 1/3 value of your truck. I would just drive that truck for a few years and then when you are ready buy the one of your dreams that already has an SC and 4WD.

I understand where you are going with this but I don't think a SC or Turbo 4cyl / 6 cyl 4Runner running 8-10 PSI boost will be smoking anyone.
I would love to see a youtube video of a 3rd gen that has 220 HP @ wheels doing a 1/4 mile. Will it be much faster than my V6 - yes.... but I don't think you will come even close to a stock Civic SI.

I have beat my friend in his integra gsr with only tranny upgrades. I am 100% sure a civic si would not be too difficult. Although usually we just do 0-speed limit to keep it kinda legal.

I think putting either on there to make it faster is a waste of money.. i would prob find something with less weight such as a little pickup or a car.. and def not go cheap on the parts with those ebay kits because you will have alot of modding to do aswell as repair and replacing.. If you were to use it on an Suv for the hills and ttrails thats a little different because sometimes you need that little umpuf to get that last wheel over.. I would say save your money on the turbo or super charger or pick up a different vehicle for it..

Wasn't going to let my thoughts get the best of me but it's obvious there's honda fan boys surfacing lol..(no pun intended, big respect to those with nicely built gsr/lsvetc/k20 etc.) not quite a si but definitely V8 power. From my personal experience (n/a 98 auto,2wd 235's,238k+) I've had my share of digs and rolls with the infamous gsr's and mildly built si's.. like most of us my t4r has never been spunky nor have I been deeply disgraced, i will admit recently off a 40roll a gsr teggy had me by half a car length nearly hitting 85 before I merged a different route(I'm still stock tho) that being said a stock gsr will walk a stock si all day,and not to mention as the newer generation civics si's curb weights are increasing, numbers on a 1/4th aren't full-filling. probably on a good-good day an si will trap a high 14 that's if it has a good driver, hell majority i seen hit mid 15's.. I must say I admire the supercharged 4runner in video running a low 15 not many suv's that can manage that... I wouldn't be so quick to bet my money on any si for that matter!! :zoom:

not a Honda fanboy I just thought that a Civic SI made a good example. I have ridden in a stock 6-speed and was impressed. Not supercar impressed just thought it was A LOT faster than my truck will ever be.

My truck doesn't feel sluggish but that is probably because of the cold-air intake & exhaust & headers I have added to it. Even will all the mods it still is not very fast but it does have a great sounding engine.
Sorry if I upset some of the SC/TC guys I just am really interested in someone posting a video of an actual 3rd gen with a SC/TC going 0-60 with a stop watch to show the results. But based on that youtube video of the drag race, 4Runner can be VERY fast and ~15 seconds is the same time (roughly) as a Civic SI stock.
Also I removed the [party] GIF from my earlier post - that was due to fat fingers on my droid-X.

I am suprised this has gone to three pages, as I doubt we will ever see the fruition of any turbo build from someone wanting to "beat his roommate".
SUVs, by design, are not inherently fast. You may be able to make them quicker, but the cost to do so properly would rival the cost of the vehicle itself. Common sense would say if fast is your goal, you chose the wrong vehicle. Some on here have made theirs faster, which is quite a feat if you ask me, but ask them about the time and effort to do so.
I had a fast car and a built S10 pickup and now have the 4Runner, and if I wanted to go fast again, I would go out and by something that is fast to begin with lol. There are costs/benefits to turbos and superchargers, I am a turbo guy myself...but when it comes to my Runner it will be staying stock in the engine bay while I save for a fast weekend toy
