Turbocharger

Should I put a turbocharger in a 2000 4runner 2wd? Would I even get traction on the road anymore? And how hard is it to install? I know there are build threads on them, but they have 4x4's when they do it, and I couldn't tell if they installed it themselves.

Sounds like fun, but why not just do the TRD super charger? In the end, you're looking at maybe 8psi on stock internals with either setup. S/C being the cheaper/easier/common setup. Normally you're going to want to turbo something that you want a lot of top end speed (not this brick). So I personally wouldn't do either, it's a V6 in a mid size SUV, never gonna be fast. I'd suggest getting a different car if you wanna go fast.:hatsoff:
 
I disagree, a V6 suv can be fast. Plus whats wrong with being different and standing out from the rest? Anyway the hardest parts are going to be fabbing it up and tuning. Tuning being the tedious part were your dealing with open and closed loop modes, AFR's, EGT's, fuel trims, timing, etc. you'll want to have wastegate control that has the ability to keep the boost below a curtain level to avoid compressor surge. You'll also want a good oil feed system for your turbo and a good EOC to keep you oil temps low. And while yes you might be limited by your stock internals its the power curve where you will see a difference. Turbos don't have the parasitic loss that superchargers suffer from. You will have turbo lag, yes, but if you size up your turbo just right you will very minimal if any turbo lag.
 
So about how much do superchargers run price wise?

After you get the SC though you're going to need to work on your fuel delivery or your engine will hate you. URD sells an outstanding kit that even an idiot could install for $895.00

After that you'll want to install a wideband A/F gauge which URD also sells for around $200.

It's a spendy endeavor, but the first time a little 4 cyl import pulls up with his Girlfriend at a stop light revving his Folgers coffee can at you and you make him look like a fool, you'll be in love. (Look out for old men in blacked out Cayenne Turbo S's though peppy little TT v8 in there pushing out 520hp 520tq) Those old men are rare, but my oh my do they give you a reality check.
 
So you guys think supercharger over turbo? Because I found a turbo for 700.
And wilson, watch out for guys in 67 mustangs, they'll give you a run for your money too. His front tires didn't touch the ground for damn near 50 feet.

Anyway, I would def. go SC over Turbo. Mainly because of the VAST amount of information readily available if you run into any road blocks.

Dude, I don't wanna know what your definition of fast is! "Quicker than stock" is how I would describe it, but it still wouldn't run with my wife's stock Mountaineer! Just a lil AWD 4.6L

Both S/C & turbo will require lots more fuel and air flow, simple FACT. Both are expensive. Do you really need the extra 50hp? At the end of the day it's still just a 4Runner. I can still beat the pants off riced out civics with my completely stock motor and 33's!

Yes, I need the extra 50hp. My roommates an *******, and I'm tired of listening to him brag about his P.O.S. truck. I have to show him up!

Good, now if you were to put the time and resources that went into those rides and put it into a 4runner you can make it something special.
 
I'll keep you guys updated on my progress, when I get my mud truck sold I'll be able to make my 4runner amazing.

FYI your truck came from the factory with 183 hp to the crank.

My last dyno run I put 264 hp to the crank, 219-220 to the wheels. That's a smidge more than 50hp.

And yes, it will run with your wifes stock Mountaineer. That "little" 4.6L only puts 250 to the crank. But, lets not turn this into a Honda forum talking about whose car will beat whose from across the country.

I would have to disagree. Look at all the turbo diesel trucks on the road; not exactly vehicles that are built for top end speed (granted diesels don't suffer quite as much from the auto ignition characteristics of gasoline). From my experience with GM's supercharged 3800, turbo is the way to go. Take a look over at the clubgp.com/newforum where those who are serious about building up that motor usually repace the factory supercharger with a turbo. I know the 3800 motor uses a roots supercharger, and I believe the TRD one is a roots as well and those aren't exactly efficient ways to make boost. Like somebody stated before, a turbo isn't going to suffer from the parastic losses of a supercharger, which results in more HP (assuming both are running at the same PSI).

However, a good point was made about there being a larger body of knowledge for the supercharger. A turbo would definitely be a "one of a kind" setup due to the wide range of choices for parts to use.

Also, what are you supercharged guys using to turn your fuel trims? With the GM 3800, most people just used a laptop and HPTuners to adjust the fuel delivery, timing, etc. Is there a similar product for Toyotas?

I use split seconds r4 software and the URD fuel timing calibrater. I believe that is the most common setup. Also tuned with a laptop. Previously I used the APEXi SAFC with crummy results.
