Turbodiesel conversion?

Okay, now that I own my truck, I'm wondering how difficult (expensive and time-consuming) it would be to convert it to a turbodiesel. I know that folks have converted toyota trucks to run on VW TDI's, which is interesting, but far too complicated.

Does anyone know about this? What are the options? Has anyone already done this to a second generation T4R?

I think that I would have to buy a 2.4L turbodiesel motor from abroad, as opposed to trying to import an entire vehicle. What about the gearbox? Would I need to find another transmission to match, or could I just swap gears out? What else would be needed? What countries have this stuff for sale? Canada? New Zealand?

To be clear, I am not equipped or qualified to do this work myself, but I am very motivated to convert to a turbodiesel. I owned a VW TDI that got 45mpgs running on biodiesel, so its hard to settle for 19mpgs...even though thats not bad by T4R standards...sadly...

I'm happy to have a truck with 4x4 that runs well and gets me from A to Z, so I am in no rush to make this happen, I'm just wondering what the options are for a turbodiesel conversion.

You'll spend about eleventy kabillion dollars and it will take you about 2 years to do.

Lots of options out there. You can convert a TDI to mechanical injection or delete the immobilizer and use the electronics. If you're going to import a Toy diesel, I would get a 1 KZ-TE or a D4D instead of a 2.4.

As posted above, it won't be cheap if you don't do it yourself.

The 1KZ-TE has a checkered history for cracking heads and the electronic fuel system can be VERY expensive to work on. Do you homework before you go this direction.

You might check out the CL around Vancouver BC, lots of Toyota imported diesels there. Tons of companies there as well, that import drive trains, trucks , and the like. I agree with the other poster, do your home work as I've heard horror stories about cracked heads. Good luck in the search, be careful.
