That's amazing. I wonder how a manufacturer can make a change like that without proper testing. Wouldn't you think that they would have field tested ceramic seat heater elements before putting into production and starting fires????
We have been repairing them under warranty for years and now they come out with a recall. Just goes along with the balljoint failure on the durangos and dakotas.
People can bash American car manufacturers all they want but every company has problems. From what I just heard Nissan is recalling 2006 Altima 4 cylinders for an engine recall. That sounds a little more expensive than measly seat heaters.

I still think it is amazing that a manufacturer would overlook something as simple as a seat heater element.

Thats an extreme scenario. The seat heaters may burn through the fabric (which I have seen) but I don't see them getting hot enough to torch the whole car. If we want to go that route the engine blowing up on the Nissans could happen on the highway and cause a collision killing many people. Now we are talking extremes.
I will admit I think Jeep is bsing in this case because that switch/heater element combo has been used since I believe 99 not 2003. They now have a regular push button on the German designed 05 and up Grands

I have seen it first hand and yes it burns through the seat just like when you burn your pants with a cigarette. The pad is not overly large in size so I don't see it catching the whole seat on fire let alone the whole car. When things get described in recalls they list them as an extreme worst case scenario.
