Tweeter To 3.5" Coax Swap

great write up.....
in order to not have to create extra room by denting the door - would you happen to know the overall depth the speaker would have to be?

I installed a set of CLARION SRG921C 3.5" speakers in the place of the tweeters without having to dent the door in for more room. The Clarion's have a mounting depth of 1-5/16"...though I did have to drill new mounting holes in the factory brackets. You can find these speakers at Fry's...link below.

I know this is an old thread, but I recently put 3.5 polks in place of the tweeters and replaced the rear speakers as well.....what a difference coupled with a Scion HU!! The stock 6x9's were not touched.

Thanks for the write-up! Instead of banging in the metal, could you just use washers when mounting the new speakers? Or will this cause the speaker to hit the speaker cover in the door panel?

It all depends on the speaker and the MY. A buddy of mine did this on his (an 03-05 version) and didn't have to dent the metal. The door panel clearance is an issue to. I had to shave the plastic flashing off around the grill and the speaker is still extremely close to it.

Thanks for this writeup, this thread inspired me to do this to mine. Switching from an 03 sport to an 08 SR5, in my 03 with the 10 speaker JBL I had cut an Infinity 3.5" coaxial into the center channel and after switching to the 08 SR5 with only 6 speakers and no center channel location, I had been missing the crispness and clarity that I had with that 3.5" center channel. I had this thread bookmarked for a couple years half but finally attempted this mod. I used a set of Infinity 3032CF 3.5" coaxials, and was able to install them as tweeters by modifying the tweeter brackets. I had to trim down and flatten the inner edges of the tweeter brackets, and the lower lip in order for the baskets to sit down far enough. I was trying to avoid denting the door panel like you did, but I ended up having to smooth out 1 bump which was about the size of a quarter. I only had to do this on the drivers side, and not the passenger side however. Here is my finished product, paired with a set of MB Quart 6x9's below. I replaced my MB Quart 1" dome tweeters that I had in there before. The difference is night and day!

I did the 3.5 coaxial swap with Pioneer TS-A878 and I'm running a Sony XAV-64BT head unit with JBL amp retained. After putting in the 3.5's I've been having a weird issue where the sound will just drop in volume (though reading on head unit the same). Seems to happen intermittently and randomly during songs. Don't think I had this problem before. Thinking it might be due to these speakers interacting incorrectly with factory amp b/c they're 4 ohm instead of the factory 8?

This could very well be an issue.

On my setup I have a Kenwood DNX head unit directly powering all my speakers. Between the ohm's probably not being close to what it should have and heat inside of the head unit (both ambient and generated) I too experience volume fluctuations after listening for a while. Turning down the volume for a bit to let it cool off seems to solve the problem until it heats back up again. It's one of my projects to replace the remaining speakers and add an amp at some point, but it's not my DD anymore and low on the priority list for mods.

I didn't want to make a new thread on an old topic. I was wondering what your thoughts on putting a 3" midrange in place of the tweeter and adding a separate tweeter on the sail panel or A pillar vs. using a 3.5" coaxial?

I was piecing together a few potential setups and saw that focal has a 3 way setup with a 6.5" midbass driver, 3" midrange driver, and tweeter. Infinity has a Kappa Perfect 3.5" midrange add on driver.

On the other hand a 3.5-4" coaxial driver does this job just as well I'm assuming paired with a 6x9 or 6.5 midrange woofer.

Maybe I'm over thinking this. Sound staging in a car is not the most ideal either. Any thoughts?

Maybe I'll post a less theoretical question instead but I was wondering is the mounting depth for the speaker limited to about 1.5"? I was looking at my options but a few fall in the 1.8-2" range.
