Twin Cities!

Anyone want to join Dave H and I at Appleton?

Here's the link to Appleton ----> Welcome to Appleton, Minnesota!

There is a link to the OHV park a few links down. For some reason the hyperlink function wasn't works...

The plan is to meet up on Sunday the 9th at 8:30am in Wayzata at the Village Chevy dealer. I think it's going tone at least a 2.5hr drive, but from what I've seen it's the closest. Gilbert and Spider Lake are about farther.

I got an invite from Dave but won't be able to join the fun and shenanigans on the 9th. Looks like it will be a good time!

Hey guys! Thanks to Dave and Rowan for the invite! I'm on the fence for now as I have limited free time between now and Christmas with a constantly growing honey-do list. I've been waiting for a chance to take the runner offroading (aside from fire lanes in northern WI) so I'd really like to go but I'll keep you posted!

Thanks for the invite guys. I'm also on the fence, but mainly because I can't really afford the extra gas, and I'd have to bring at least my 3yo with me. I'll post back in a few days with a yay or nay.

Welcome to Plymouth. I work in Plymouth off 55 and Fernbrook... probably about 5 or 6 miles away from the Chevy dealer in Wayzata off 394 if that's the same Chevy dealer that's the meetup point.

AHHH I wish money wasn't tight right now.

No worries!! Priorities! It would be awesome if you could make it, but we'll go again hopefully sooner than later. I'm just glad this sub forum is back to life!!

Have a safe trip fellas

Hey guys,
Sorry I never got back to you about yesterdays trip. Last week was ridiculously busy. Did you end up going?! I spent the majority of the day plowing mine and my 3 neighbors driveways all day! We got about 14-15 inches over here in Hudson. So far loving my first winter with the runner. I feel unstoppable!

Nope, didn't make it there

I am in sub-tropical Duluth. While I don't "wheel" for the sake of "wheeling", my job takes me to a LOT of off-the-beaten-path places all over Northern MN, so if anyone is looking for some places to go, I may be able to point some out.

There are some pretty cool and little-used roads in the Superior National Forest that would make for some good off-roading - not the hard-core, speed-type of off-roading with jumps and all that, but simply traveling from one place to another along abandoned roads where no people have probably been in 60+ years or so. Tons of spots like that outside Ely, Finland, etc.

Those and the state "Minimum Maintenance" (or often "Zero Maintenance," as I like to call 'em) roads are really cool, sometimes.

Awesome! What are some places that are decent drive distance from Minneapolis? I live in Plymouth and Mike lives in Woodbury we were going to go to Appleton but the weather was pretty bad so we didn't get to go. Thanks for the input!

I'd also be interested in some of those 'zero maintenance' roads up around the Superior Nat'l Forest area.

Getting up to Duluth is a nice straight shot on 35.. only a few hours drive.. 2 1/2 ish from south Minneapolis.

I'm 110% down.

Couple options...

1) Take I-35 to Duluth, then take highway 61 (the "scenic" North Shore Drive) northbound. You can turn north on Route 2 in Two Harbors and after about 15 miles, there will be some National Forest roads on the left. Also some obvious logging roads.

2) If you follow Route 2 to where it T's on Rt 15 (about 25 miles north of Two Harbors), take a right on 15, go less than a mile, and you'll find the Stony Grade Road, which is part of the Finland State Forest. It heads north to an area called Scott Junction (just a stretch of road). More remote country back in there. Slightly OT, but that's also a good place to spot a Canada lynx, if you're lucky (big snowshoe hare population in there, which is their main food source).

3) Or...if you go farther up 61, you can take Route 1 north through Finland towards Isabella. Outside of Finland you start seeing the same type of roads. After Isabella, though, you're really in the boonies. LOTS of unmarked "roads to nowhere." A lot are private property and marked as such, but many are not. If you turn directly into the National Forest when you hit the 90-degree left turn in Isabella, you're on forest service roads from there on and the sky's the limit. No houses, some cool lakes, etc.

4) I forget whether it's before the Stony Grade road or after it, but Route 2 continues North after the 'T' north of Two Harbors (though it will be a distinct left turn) and joins up with Route 1 North of Isabella. There's a whole lot of nothing in that stretch. Good moose-spotting area, too, as is highway 1 north of Finland.

5) Another way to go from Duluth is to take 53 north towards Virginia, then get on 169 towards Ely just outside Virginia. As you get closer to Ely, there some more forest roads, but a LOT more after it (not well-traveled up there). Some aren't even marked. For some reason, I always end up on these (?).

6) 53 N towards I-Falls also has some remote roads, but that's pretty far for a day trip (this is where that whole "expedition vehicle" concept would come in handy!)

Lots of general poking-around roads around Cook, Babbit, Embarass, etc.

7) These are all a pretty good distance from the cities. A closer alternative is the Nemadji State Forest, which is to the east off of I-35, between Hinckley and Duluth. Not as remote as the other stuff I mentioned, but better than trying to off-road in Bloomington (!).

If you have time and/or go through Duluth on a weekday (like a Friday), a couple of good places to stop would be at the Superior National Forest HQ on Grand Avenue in Duluth and the DNR Forestry Office in Two Harbors (right on Route 2, north of town). Stop in and pick up some maps.

More when I can think of it. Hopefully these maps will give some sense to what I'm saying.

Looks like the TC group is growing to a nice size.. Maybe we can get a run together when the weather is nicer.
