Two loose nuts after a tire rotation...

So how about I went to the dealership for my 10k service about 3 weeks ago and today I just felt like making sure the nuts were up to 85 torque. Two nuts were barely on!

From those of you that have some knowledge what do you think about safety? 4/6 seems is better than nothing but how dangerously was I driving for about 1k miles?

I have no way of currently checking the lock nut but I’ll see if there’s a key with the Jack later.

I’m kinda pissed at the dealership. Yeah everyone makes mistakes but making sure the nuts are torqued up to specs is basic stuff.

I have a torque wrench for this very reason.

Well response number one is free Toyota care isn’t free. Search these forum an read years’ worth of dealer related issues.

If you do go to the dealer always double check their work. I had three warranty related issues, all of them they mucked something up.

Finally, just do the work yourself and know you did it right, or at least own it if you didn’t.

Only recourse is to take it back and tell them nicely that they messed up. They’re simply going to offer to recheck them I am sure. I would see if you can at least get a parts coupon for 30% off to buy some filters and other consumables.

Took my 3rd gen to the dealer a few years back for a brake job. Drove 5 miles home on the expressway and thought something felt a little weird. Pulled in my driveway and used my foot to push on the wheels and found the right rear wheel with EVERY lug nut on about halfway. My phone call to the manager was barely restrained. They comped the brake job however. I double check everything now.

You might want to check a couple of other things: If the spare was involved, check that it was put back up correctly and tight. Also get under and look at jack points and issues if done incorrectly - scratches, scrapes, dents, etc.

Lug key is a must. I'd get one ASAP.

If the lock nut was installed on vehicle at time of purchase, the dealer should have provided that to you. Check glove box also if nothing is located near jack.

Probably no damage if the other 4 were properly torqued; after all lots of vehicles have 4 lug juts (or 3!) from the factory, and you didn't do anything hard core.

I recently changed out the locking lug nuts on my truck so the guy who rotates the tires won't have to mess with the key. This seems to be the lug that was missed when I checked my torque setting after the last rotation. I also wanted to have some spare lug nuts so I bought six.

I wonder what happen to the ones the dealer removed when they installed the locking lug nuts. Oh ya I just bought them back at $9 each.

Note: If you changed to a after market rim and bought different lugs you might want to hang on to your original lug nuts. The new ones may not fit the OEM spare tire.

My FJ cruiser was serviced at my local dealer, within 40 miles 4 lug nuts fell off, 3 on right front one on left, needless to say I was not happy. Service manager was furious
All the lug nuts were replaced after checking studs
I bought a half dozen spares

Toyota Care is a joke. Unskilled, give-a-s@#t employees paid min. wage to change oil and swap tires around.
I go to the dealer for nothing but warranty and recalls and every one of these has been botched.

When I got my Wildpeaks I had them mounted by my local mechanic. I've been using this place for almost 40 years so I never expect any problems but I thought id check the torque of the lug nuts. Every one was perfect. It's hard to find a good repair shop and when you find one consider yourself very lucky! My problem is that since then the business has been sold and I have no idea how this guy will be. I'm hoping the owners I dealt with for so long sold to a competent person. I do most of the work on my vehicles but I'm 67 now and there are things I just can't do on my back in the driveway any more. Good thing all my vehicles are 2019's.
