Two questions on hood scoop...

If one were to, say, replace the hood of their SR5 with a Sport-scoop one ....

1. Does the engine block actually require any modification? Is the scoop *just* for looks- are the V6 engines of an SR5 and a Sport identically shaped?

2. Will it give me *any* performance boost whatsoever?

1. No engine mod required - V6 engine of SR5 and Sport is exact same model and shape. It is just for looks, at least here in NA. In Japan, they have a diesel model and the scoop actually houses the intercooler and is functional. For us, it's package bling with cool factor of infinity.

2. No. However, it does give coolness boost. The only drawback is that the overhead noon sun reflects on the scoop and into your face. It's really annoying.

Why would the hood scoop require modifications to the engine block? You would need to go through the engine cover, intake mainfold, and the head (which contains the valve train) before you even get to the engine block... am I missing something here?

As for the performace "boost." The hood scoop does the same thing as decals on a Honda... It will give you 50 hp to the wheels! :biggrin2:

Sorry, by engine block I basically just meant the guts. I am not a mechanic

I believe someone did try this mod, but found that it created more problems since the intake filter is not in the right place to take advantage of the scoop.... However, it is really functional at catching bugs in the spring and summer. Does this count?

Toyota has a tendancy to use top mount intercoolers. I'm not quite sure why this is. The 3s-gte (Celica GT4/All-Trac and MR2) had top mount intercooler, and it seems like everyone who wanted decent performance would modify the intercooler to front mount.

So, reading this post, it now makes sense that the some 4r's come with a hood scoop, as foriegn versions have turbo diesels.If the turbodiesel was sold in the USA, i would have bought it.

I just love the hood scoop !! I think it add's a little toughness to the look.

If I had an SR5 I would replace the hood and grill (to a limited grill) My son paints for Toyota and lexus in a separate facility ( not dealer owned ) and can do it all cheaply for me.
