Two way radios

For this one purpose, I might actually miss Nextel...

Anyway, I'm looking into getting a pair of two way radios, walkie-talkies, or whatever for our drive to CO. I decided to get a Penkse truck and my wife will drive the 4R separately, but she want's something to stay connected with, especially if we are in bad cellular areas. Something with a DC charger would be preferred since we'll be driving for 10 hours a day for 3 days.

Suggestions?

My old Motorola's have served me well. I've used them on the highways, and while trail running--usually bring a few along to hand out to those without CB's. Now those things are line-of-sight, so they'll start breaking up if you get far apart on trails where heavy tree coverage or hills are involved, but they're great on open roads. The AA batteries actually last quite a while. Mine do not have DC chargers, but they're probably available. One tip--keep them a good distance from your mouth when speaking or it will garble the voice on the other end.

I moved nearly cross country twice in the past f we years. Both times I used a good set of midland radios from cabellas. They worked great to talk to the wife without messing with cell phones. I was in a moving truck and the wife was in my tundra. The radios made it easy and safe with them being clipped to the seat belt by my shoulder. No messing with phones, all I had to to was reach my left hand up and push a button near my shoulder.

If you ski or snowboard (just assuming since your moving out here to Colorado) I would get a decent set. A lot of people take them up the mountain with them to communicate when seperated. Seems like I only used ours to say I was tired of falling down and hurting myself so I'm headed to the bar. See you when you get down off the slope! If your just buying them to use for the road trip then I would get some cheapo's from Wally world.

Yeah I agree - I think that's why I was prepared to spend a bit of time reviewing them and seeking out opinions. I ended up ordering the Midlands linked above.

You understand that neither of those radios get anywhere near the range they claim?
Divide by 10 and you will get close to the actual range they are capable of.
The claims are based on unobstructed mountaintop to mountaintop range, when all the planets are properly aligned and the wind is in the right direction and ...
