Absolutely. I'd sit down and have a beer and a discussion/debate with anyone. The moment someone turned things argumentative, it would be finished and a different less volatile topic would need to be discussed.
I'm almost never in Seattle, but if you're ever in Denver drop me a line and Id love to take you to the range and have a beer and some conversation afterwards!
A few things worth noting regarding the internet, technology and the media:
1) Mediating our discussions has turned pretty much everyone into a child, name calling, emotions; just plain ridiculous behavior.
2) The majority/middle of the road cool headed folks gets drowned out by the extremes screaming on both sides.
3) The media should never be trusted. Never use one single source. Realclearpolitics.com is about the best single source I've found that does a good job of writing both sides into their reporting.
As a society we need more face to face discussion. Real discussion and not just weather and sports. It doesn't much occur anymore and we are all worse off for it.
I make a point of inviting folks who posit different beliefs and opinions than me to go to the range, or grab a beer or coffee, or whatever and have a real discussion.
Most of the time minds don't change drastically, but perspectives slightly shift and a better understanding is gained of why a belief or opinion is held and formulated.
I challenge everyone to have at least one sit down discussion with someone "new" or "different" or outside of your echo chamber and make a real effort to understand their perspective as well as effectively relate yours.
The world will be a better place if we get back to better communicating with each other.
I also challenge everyone to review your post prior to posting it on the internet and if you don't believe you'd say that to a mans face, then don't post it. If you get so angry that you want to call someone a name or threaten them or put them into a box; turn the computer off and go do something relaxing or productive and come back later.
We are seriously at a volatile turning point in our country; yet again. We are being deceived from every angle and turned against one another, divided against one another. It makes us weak and this roads leads to violent and bloody ends as we've seen over and over again throughout history.
Everyone has a choice how we move forward. It starts with each individual.
