UCA Decision help

I used one Moog and one raybestos as an experiment to see which one will last longer. Total cost was about $70 . OEM is definitely better but I wanted the zerk fittings that he aftermarket ones come with.

From what I have 'heard' Wheelers has had good luck with the Moogs. I bet they are all good as long as the boot stays intact.

I've used moog on most my stuff in the past and haven't had any complaints, so I'd probably go with them now
 
I can definitely see the ups and downs of both. I think I've decided on the ball joint style as it will suit me and my style better. Now, as far as oem ball joints compared to moogs, I'm not gonna start a war there!
 
The earlier generation LR UCAs had a lot of problems with slipping out of adjustment, on a mojave road trip, one of our rigs LRs, we had to keep tightening down the adjustment nut 3 or 4 times throughout the trip. LR stepped up and sent out that person brand new UCAs free of charge. Now I know of several FJ guys who rock crawl that run the new gen ones without any problems. The LRs have way more adjustment features than the Camburgs, but the Camburgs are bomb proof.
 
I was weary of the LR problems as well, but I called Toytec and confirmed that SPC has corrected all of the issues. 10k miles on mine so far and no problems!

I'm kinda thrifty sometimes so instead of dropping coin on the camburg covers I put a couple 2 inch PVC pipe caps (like they use on a clean out) they fit right in tight and look fine with a little plasti dip on them. I did use a little RTV on hem t ensure they wouldn't allow any crap in there.
 
If its any consolation, I've been running LR UCAs for almost 3 years now. Aside from the rubber bushings going out in about a year or so (which SPC fixed by sending me an entire new set of UCAs with the newest Delrin bushings in them for free under an extended warranty) I haven't had any issues.

I've seen Keak's LR UCA break, but his suspension set-up vs. his additional weight/upgrades made me feel a little uneasy laying the blame squarely on his UCA (though the welds did fail and he got his covered under warranty as well, so I won't dispute that I think there was a manufacturing defect there; just that his set-up puts more stress on his vehicle's suspension than needs to be.)

I've been pretty hard on the 4Runner when off-roading so if they were as weak as everyone likes to say, they should have grenaded by now. Just some food for thought, not saying that they haven't had issues in the past or even recently. But so far their products have been mostly holding up this past year or two and their customer service has been top notch in trying to help people with older LR UCAs that have issues.

Also their Balljoints seem to be much tougher than factory balljoints, so I would say they are comparable to uniballs in strength. I don't think I've heard of one of the LR UCA balljoints shearing or cracking.

[MENTION=66300]Intruder[/MENTION] had his LR ball joint fail. Took out the CV and some other stuff in the process.

Mine had worn a hole in the boot and had play in it after 8 months. The latest model bushings were also shot.

Interesting... I've never heard of Delrin bushings wearing out prematurely...

Yup, passenger side ball joint failed and not long after the bushings on the driver side were shot. I know a few people locally whose LR ball joints failed now, though none as catastrophic as mine - close to $1000 in damage.

There is a decent chance my torque wrench isn't the most accurate any more, and perhaps I over-torqued them, so I can't attribute total blame to SPC on that.

On my new TC arms, I only have them torqued to about 35 ft/lb and put on a lock nut to prevent the main nut from coming loose. I have more time and miles now on the TCs with the new stainless uniball, and everything is still tight and quiet. I have greased the bushings once, since I had most of the front end apart, anyway. I put a few drops of Tri Flo on the uniballs every thousand miles or so, when I'm spraying the Icon spherical bearings with lithium grease.
