UCA's hitting spring at full droop

At full droop when on stands my Ironman 4x4 UCA's are hitting my spring.

If I switch to a tubular design from Dobinsons, Dirt King, or Camburg, do you think this will help with my clearance in this area?

So, I went out & jacked mine up so it was fully off the ground in the front. The driver's side UCA does not make contact. The passenger's side just does touch right at full droop.

Dobinsons IMS & UCAs with about the same lift as you (3.5in F / 3in R).

ETA: I was on an uneven surface, so I'm not sure if that is a factor or not.

move the spring coil a little bit left or right (as in twist it left or right)...sometimes the UCA will find a empty spot between the coils for clearance
 
Do you have a lot of preload?

i was wondering about this actually. but preload changes ride height, not overall length of the assembly so it shouldnt matter right? he's just gonna have less droop travel from ride height but tons of bump travel

I kinda think it's the iron man uppers not playing nice with his extended travel shocks
 
So unless he wants be Mr. Desert Runner, should he be fine on trails, etc?

No it wont be fine on trails. Hitting a medium bump with any type of speed above 5 mph it will touch the spring.

I think (hope) switching to tubular UCA's will help.

I guess we will see.

I'm surprised more people havent ran into this problem.
 
When you installed the UCA's do you torque down the long bolt while the vehicle was in the air or when the vehicle was on the ground with the wheels on? (You are supposed to do the latter)

Not sure if this would solve you problem entirely but it will help keep the UCA from dropping down so far at full droop and will put less wear on the bushings.

I bolted them on while in the air. So you are saying loosen them with the truck on the ground and re torque?

Wouldn't that depend on the type of bushing the upper control arm has ? OEM type fixed bushing would make sense to do this since the bushing twists as the arm moves up, or down. Aftermarket polyurathane floating type wouldn't matter because the bushing doesn't twist, it rotates in the arm, right ?

Just looked up the Ironman4x4 upper control arms. Looks like these have OEM style rubber bushings on the body mount side, so like smeerun mentioned, the control arm bolt should be tightened and torque with the full weight of the truck though I'm not sure if this would prevent your issue of the arm hitting the springs

You are correct, the OEM type fixed bushings require torque to happen with the full weight of the vehicle is present and not while in the air at full droop. I assumed the Ironman4x4 UCA's use OEM (I have Dobinsons which also use OEM bushings) though so thank you for verifying that.

Like I said, I dunno if this would solve your issue but I do recommend it. Please report back with your findings!
 
torqueing that bolt on the ground is correct, but it wont change droop. man thats gonna be annoying if youre hearing it just dailying around.


I have loads of space between my king coil and the Dirt king upper. but im not running extended travel kings (it's only 1/2" extra droop i believe)

Have you tried reducing preload and then putting it on full droop?

I wonder if they didnt design them for extended travel? "direct replacment for OEM uppers" and more castor. but no comment on adding travel. Super annoying. before you buy another set maybe reach out to TC, DK, Camburg or whoever you like and verify you wont have contact. I wonder if the coilover assembly length is playing a factor as well.
 
Before I did anything else I would contact Ironman for their input. Give them a chance to comment.

It doesnt do it while dailying around, but if I hit a really big dip it'll have small contact. Off road is where it'll become a problem.

I replied on your other thread about the billet UCAs. Look into SPCs they are adjustable for both caster and camber to help you avoid making contact with your coil spring.
