Just wanted to share my experience with you guys and express to you how unsafe it is to bring anything you need done to Uhaul.
Last week, i had my truck in to get a Drawtite hitch installed along with the wiring. $260 after tax was the total. Yes high, but i figured lifetime warranty and i should be able to trust them....
As im sitting outside waiting for my hitch to be done, i get called into the garage by the "Hitch Tech" asking me to come hold my plastic trim back while he splices the wiring in. This should have thrown a red flag for me but i thought nothing of it at the time because it was late and all the other guys went home.
The wiring was done fine, no issues there. All his connections looked good. Now, he pulls my truck out. Parks it, jumps on the hitch to test its rigidity. Everything looks great. I shake the hitch a few times, no wiggles. Pay for it and leave.
Next day im hooking my utility trailer up to it and i noticed it had alot of play in it, i get underneath to find TWO of the six bolts were holding it on. The others were carriage bolts that were followed up by nuts that DID NOT FIT THE THREAD, I tried tightening them up to find that once they would snug the pressure would push the nut back off because they were so oversized to the bolt.
Now at this point im furious, I called the manager who proceeded to tell me that he needs to take a look at it before he can do anything. I TOLD him that i was not going back out there ( 40 min ride each way) unless he refunded my gas money. He refused and i told him i was calling corporate. He quickly changed his mind.
By the way, at this point i had bought new bolts and nuts and secured my hitch on my truck properly, torqued down with a impact wrench. Not finger tight like these f****** idiots did.
I drive down there the next day to see the same guy who installed my hitch, i immediately confront him in front of all the customers asking if he installs all peoples hitches with the wrong nuts and bolts and he says..."Its not my truck, i dont care.":gun5: That smiley is about how i felt at that point. Now im yelling in the store, explaining to customers what these idiots did to my hitch.
The manager stops me and takes me in back to speak words with him, explaining how his tech had alot of trouble getting my frame to work with the bolts. "ARE YOU F****** KIDDING ME!!! I dont care what he has to do thats his job!" Meanwhile i can hear the installer talking to co workers saying how he didnt care about the job because it was 5 on a Friday. Now im so furious that the manager said he was going to call the cops, i responded with " Good, cause im calling the DOT right now."
The manager puts the phone down, goes to the counter and immediately refunds me for the labor and half the price of the hitch, and i got a $30 coupon toward Uhaul products(<<--About as good as tits on a bull in my eyes.)
Well, now that i have vented about my wonderful Uhaul experience i feel much better. Needless to say the hitch is correctly installed, double lock nutted on my truck because of ME, not Uhaul. I feel much safer knowing i did the work. Makes you wonder what auto shops actually do underneath some vehicles....
Sorry for the rant, but you all should know about this safety hazard Uhaul put me through because were i to have a family, towing my trailer down the highway at 60 mph and something were to happen. I would never forgive myself for not checking the ignorant, shoddy and unsafe hitch install.
