Uncomfortable seats in LTD

Does anyone else think the 5th gen limited seats are uncomfortable? I can only drive about 2 hours before the seats start bothering my back. I find that there is not enough support in the upper parts on the seat. My 4th gen seats were way more comfortable.

Yep. There are a few threads on this. My wife complains about it all the time on my SR-5 (I don't think the Limited seats are any different than the SR5 with premium package). It's highly subjective, of course; but I think my tacoma, my dad's 4th gen. LTD, and my wife's highlander LTD are much more comfortable.

I think they're breaking in a bit better, the 3rd gen limited had probably the best leather seats. The 4th gen were a bit stiffer, but fit larger people. The 5th are a compromise between both - but the padding is a lot stiffer. They're getting better (or i'm getting used to it) vs new though.

Seat comfort opinion is as varied as people's shapes. I love the seats in the 4Runner, much better than the Honda I had before. Why even ask? Are you 5'2" and weigh 120 lbs or are you 6'5" and weigh 280? Do you have a big, skinny or no butt? Have you had a back injury in the past? Are you 22 years old or 62? Seat comfort is like gas milage - it will never be the same for any two people.

Many threads on this and it comes done to the individual. Just the opposite for me, every time I drive my Trail I appreciate how comfortable I am. I took my EX35 out recently, which used to be my DD, and despite a far more luxurious and better built seat, I'm more comfortable in my 4Runner.

I was very uncomfortable in mine to the point that I was looking for a re-upholsterer to reshape it for me. I never got around to having the seat reshaped, though, because either I just got used to it or it broke in to fit my back after a couple of months. Hang in there for a little while longer and it may get better. :)

Somehow I adjusted my seat the way it feels comfortable. Once I did 11 hours drive in one day and after 10 hours I started feeling my neck. Might be because the last part of the trip was at night on busy highway though. Other than that I have no complains for seats.

Let me preface by saying that back in 2000 I was rear-ended by an 18 wheeler into the back of a stopped Greyhound bus, so I have my fair share of back and neck issues....

At the time the 2 vehicles I had narrowed it down to were the Maxima SE and the Passat V6 AWD. The Passat had everything I wanted, especially the AWD but I chose the Maxima strictly because of the seating adjustment possibilities.

IN PARTICULAR- because in the Passat (like our 4Runners) when you raise and lower the back of the seat cushion the entire seat back raises and lowers with it. In the Maxima the seat moved independently from the seatback allowing me to put the lumbar support exactly where my size and shape needed it to be. Are ya listening Toyota? :hello: = )

All of that being said I'm really never unable to find good positions, a variety of them no less, and I've taken many 4++ hour trips.

In a perrrfect world they'd find a way to have the lumbar bubble adjust up and down, kinda like the seatbelt adjustments most vehicles have.

In the meantime, and to address your issue I'd suggest playing around with the overall elevation of the seat in combination with adjusting the steering wheel column every which way (near, far, up and down) as I've learned through the years that even my arm placement can affect my back and neck on long trips but when I find the right combo it makes all the difference.

Hope that helps!

My wife misses the lumbar support on the passenger side... found it kinda weird that a $40K vehicle has no lumbar support on the passenger side... The seats in the FJ are more comfy in my mind because they wrap a bit more, but the 4Runner has grown on me. I do think the seats take some time to break in and get better with age.

Okki

I had the same problem when I got my LE in January. My back hurt so much that I, too, looked into having the seat modified.

I ended up putting a rolled up hand towel on the seat where the seatback meets the bottom cushion. It filled the gap at the lower part of my back and made the seat much more comfortable.

After six months, I tried it again without the towel. To my pleasant surprise, the seat is much more comfortable now. I'm not sure if the seat is broken in or if I got used to it, but I don't need the towel any more.

This thread has a lot of good info on the topic: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/71627-6-months-still-cant-get-used-seat-5.html
