"under the hood" battery maintainer?

Does anyone here have any experience with automotive battery tenders/maintainers? My wife can't drive anymore but we keep her car as a spare for when mine's in the shop or something. Anyway, it only gets driven about once a month at best, so I've had some problems with the battery dying.

I bought a Schumacher charger online, that supposedly could be mounted under the hood and plugged in to an extension cord. But when I got it, the instructions say to leave the hood open during charging. I can't leave the hood open all the time with the car sitting in the driveway!

Does anyone know of a good maintenance charger that can go under the hood to keep it out of the weather, and doesn't require leaving the hood open?

I have one made by Atec. The part number is ASE 9002. It is mountable(2 screw holes). I mounted it to the battery tray for my dad's boat. It works pretty good and has been 2 years since I've gotten it. The Schumacher one is similar but doesn't have the 2 mounting holes. My store sells them both and I was think of getting a Schumacher one for each of the 4 atvs that my family has until I found a charging station that plugs into 4 batteries.

Can you keep the hood closed with that, while it's charging the battery?

Research motorcycle battery maintainers. I use Yuasa models but there are tons of options.

Dude, for the once every two years you'd actually NEED it, get a rental. Talk about saving money...

Yes you can if you feed the plug through the grill

I use them on all my vehicles from boats to big trucks. Use them on our Wind Machine Batteries 9mo of the year. Extend their life x5.

These can not be beat for cars and toy batteries. Dont need the waterproof one either....just put it out of the way and it will work just fine. If your really worried...silicone the seams and wire connectors.
