Underneath rattle

Hello all. I have 23 Limited 4x4 with 12500 miles. When I make left turns, I hear a loud clanky sound/rattle. It is worse when the turns are sharp and at low speed. I have an appointment at my dealer this Thursday. I immediately thought of a rock, but I am never on gravel, except my short driveway. I am just looking for any other suggestions. Thanks in advance.

There are lots of heat shields on the 4Runner. They can come loose or just rub on the exhaust.

Check for any play or wear in the sway bar bushings or links.

Take a look at the CV joints on the front axle too – if they're damaged or have too much play, you might hear noise, especially when making sharp turns.

Worn-out or damaged strut mounts can also make clanking sounds.

Another thing to check is loose or worn tie rod ends since they're pretty important for steering responsiveness.
 
I 3rd on the heat shields. I had one come loose about a year ago that was driving me crazy. i looked under the truck, it was sitting on top of suspension and frame works in the rear.

i believe ive had another one come loose up front...and i can hear it vibrating here and there. Ill go looking for it as the weather warms up...during my next oil change in March.

The more I heard the noise this morning driving to work really makes me think heat shields. Thank you!

Agree with others potentially heat shield, does the volume of the rattle change
at all while in/out of gear? Just get under the truck and poke your heat shields, you'll know in a second if these are causing the problem.

Suspecting a wheel bearing here too.

Hello all and thank you for the responses. I had my appointment yesterday at my Toyota dealer. I went with the mechanic on a test drive, and he could definitely hear the noise. I was there an hour and the service manager advised that the left front backing plate was pushed up against the rotor. He advised they put the backing plate back to its proper location and tightened everything. He advised the rotor was not damaged. I advised I wanted to go on a test drive again with the mechanic. To my surprise, the noise was gone. I asked how this could happened. I advised this thing has never been off road and I had never hit a curb or drove up on a sidewalk. They really did not have an answer for me, but I was fine with that because it was fixed. They advised to take it on another test drive. I did and the noise was still gone. I am happy. After 5 4runners and a Tacoma, this was my first warrant repair. I can't complain.

easy fix. good outcome. toyota or not, there's always a defect rate in any production line. who knows maybe the person assembling that part was distracted and didn't properly seat/tighten it.

Certainly you have had your tires rotated in 12000 miles. Those backing plates can easily get bent when rotating tires.

(Toyota recommends rotating tires every 5000 miles).

If the backing plate wasn’t bent from production and you didn’t notice it from mile 1, then at some point someone or something bent. The rotor backing plate isn’t something that would wear/degrade/bend over time. Not a Quality issue from Toyota. Either driver or technician caused.

I only performed an eye-ball test for my rattling. now youve given me something to look for in the front wheel wells.
