Unichip

Does anyone have any experience with the Unichip performance chip upgrade. I put a Superchip in my Explorer and it was the biggest bang for the the buck by far. Does anyone have this chip on or know someone who does?

I haven't tried or even heard of Unichip, but they do make a module for both the V6 & V8 4Runner. Here is a link to the '05+ V8:

jet makes a ecu tune that is hella less expensive...270 at some places shipped.

I contacted Jet chips a while ago, adn they said that if you get the ECU reflash you need to use Premium Gas.....so F that one!

you need the octane to be able to crank up the timing. all they can do is turn up the timing and lean the mixture to get more power and you need premium fuel to do it.

I've heard some reviews about the Jet chip that didn't do anything for the car. You have to think that our engine's are pretty much delivering full power. How could Toyota leave 10+ HP on the table? I'm skeptical.

I got the performanceproducts.com catalog a few weeks ago and they have a new Unichip that can integrate with a PDA and you can modify a few performance points. Reprogram for exhaust upgrade or supercharger etc.

It was pretty pricey at around 1200.

I'm a little hesitant doing the chip upgrade since if it screws your 4runner up, the dealership may not cover it under warranty. They'll be able to plug into your ODBII port and see that the parameters have exceeded the factory programming.

I've been around the "chip" market for over 11 years and they made respectable gains on forced induction factory cars since adding even a couple more psi of boost is a big deal but on NA motors they just aren't worth the under 10whp you might gain.

These chips can't produce significant HP with what they say they do.

If you remove the Unichip before going to the dealer, and by that, I mean unplugging it, and plugging the original ecu in, the dealer will not be able to tell that you had one. Not saying its ethical, moral etc, just commenting on the issue of being able to detect it.

i think any performance chip would either increase your stock hp. meaning, it'll adjust to the current settings when you bought it. for example. if you have a '97 and now it's '06. of course you might lose some hp since the vehicle is getting old so the chip will adjust back to the normal stage. either that or it's increasing more hp which isn't good for your engine. might ruined your car also. so i'm not going to play with that.

The unichip looks to be a piggy back ecu so you don't have to remove your stock ecu.

What I'm getting at is that Toyota can interface with your truck through the ODBII port and diagnose that the engine parameters have been exceeded thus voiding your warranty. They don't have to see a black box sitting where you ecu should be to know that there is something rotten in Denmark...

i don't trust jetchip or any other chips...

Toyota ecu's are hard to tinker with.

If you leave the unichipm plugged in, they can read the paramaters. But if its not plugged in, there is no way they can tell why the paramaters may have been exceeded. According to unichip, it is not detectable once unplugged.

But they'll still know they've been exceeded. ECU doesn't do it by itself so you've done something to cause it. Not worth the headache for maybe 10HP if you ask me...
