Unintended Acceleration: Not from Electronics

Everyone should realize they are much more likely to randomly get and die from food poisoning or a bacteria infection like MRSA.

Well know that you said it

I have been poisoned by bad oysters. I was hoping to die that night but I survived that w/out any medical help. Oddly enough I got a splinter of wood embedded in elbow and had MSRA(the newly evolved form of staph-methycyllin resistant) for a few months w/out realizing it, until I popped what appeared to be a cyst. My arm doubled in size overnight, and went septic until I had an IV drip. I survived that too. Like they say "if you live hard you've got to be tough."
Relying strictly on the ECU to correctly interpret my actions right everytime w/out a override of some sort is like telling me that a computer never crashes. Now consider this is a computer that is exposed to extreme temp. variations, vibrations, moisture, salinity ect. ect.

You sir, driving a 97' are probably not at risk b/c you have a cable, possibly w/ some ECU interface. Once you understand that our new unquestioning faith in strictly drive by wire tech has led to public disinformation.

Check out the NHTSA stats of SA in tacomas from 05-08 Since they went to ETC-ECU SA increased 20 times than the previous three years. That is not 20% , but 20 times. Camry's 02-04 SA since they adopted ETC-ECU increased 26 times than the previous three years. That is fact, before the media hype.

In Yoda's trial the NASA engineers, not familiar with ECU or car diagnostic engineering, pointed to a very different result than the verdict would indicate. They found the system had serious flaws that wouldn't log in the EDR. Look up "tin whiskers" in referance to the trial. Remember there is no separate brake override. They now "program" the ECU w/ it. This makes little sense, b/c if the ECU fails, so does the brake override programmed in the ECU.
They must have a separate operating system.

So it sounds like I am correct then. I haven't read too much into the trial but I still believe the errors could be real.

It is not as if the US media is capable of real investigative reporting anymore. If anyone here is a reporter and offended then feel free to F-off.

Anyways yes I have a 97 and I also have a fuel cuttoff switch so I think I am good.

all i have to say is i work for a dealer and we're still going strong...even right after this whole thing came about....meanwhile GM/Chrysler closed down x amount of dealerships in the same time frame. Toyota stood strong through the rough times and the numbers dont lie.

I've had two runaway throttle experiences with my 4Runner. Both I promise unrelated to sticking to the floor due to mats or whatever. Both cases did happen after I floored it. Something stuck, either the sensor in the pedal or something electronic.

I hear ya

After taking my 06 4Runner to the dealership I was upset w/ how the upper management dealt with it. The top brass of course blamed me and then the floormats, and then questioned the accuracy of witness testimonies. I have never experienced what happened to me in a lifetime of being in different vehicles. They call the ECU a "no fail system"-an oxymoron of sorts. I told him that I would pay to have a brake override system installed. I do not need a lawsuit or even them to pay a dime. I called corporate and got the same treatment. I imagined it, made the same major mistake twice, and they warned that aftermarket floormats, like my Weathertec, can be the culprit. I asked why are you guys now installing brake override system's and heavily advertising about it on the 2011 vehicles.

Had to post it

Sorry had to post it before my conclusion. Anyways, I have told the dealership and corporate that the vehicle has been great other than that single problem. Any car manufacturer that blames everything,(including the owner), but the trucks' computer is highly suspect. There is not a shred of reason or logic supporting their arguments in my case. They cannot explain anything that I experienced. They can only deny and defer blame. I guess 2010 was the last year of the "fail proof" Toyota ECU-ETC system, as witnessed by the 2011's reliance on a brake override system. It isn't right or safe.

All this talk sure makes me appreciate my tendency to buy older vehicles! Every time I hear about a new technology that separates the driver from direct control of the vehicle, I want to grab the nearest engineer and scream, "Wake up!". No direct control of the throttle? That's just dumb.

Why would you need to have a "brake override system" installed when the brakes can stop the vehicle now even when you hold the gas pedal to the floor. Also you can always turn off the key or take it out of gear. Those work too, I tried them.
