Universal Pink Coolant?

I recently got my timing belt/water pump done at an independent shop. They said they would be using Toyota pink coolant. I noticed on the invoice the item number for the coolant was not the Toyota item number. I also noticed my coolant reservoir was below the low level when engine is cold in the morning, but the coolant was indeed pink. I called the shop to inquire and they said they use a "universal pink coolant" that is mixable with Toyota pink coolant. Does this sound right to y'all?

From what I've read, the Toyota pink doesn't play well with anything but Toyota pink.

That said, assuming that they properly fully flushed the system, you should be OK. I would be bothered that they didn't do the job like they said they would, though.

Personally, I've used Pentofrost A4 and Zerex Asian Formula in our Toyota vehicles with LL PINK and have had no problems mixing.

Look for something that does not contain any silicate or borate.

Should be okay to mix any ethylene glycol coolant with any other ethylene glycol coolant (the colors are just dyes), but I'd stick with Toyota spec'd stuff due to difference in additives between manufacturers. It will probably be okay but if it starts getting dingy in color, flush and refill with SLLC.

OEM calls for this, and yes it's pink

Mixing isn't preferred, that's why this 50/50 mixture is ready to go. If they used universal, obviously it isn't specific. Shouldn't be dangerous, but its not what you're radiator was meant to run. But like I said it shouldn't be dangerous after all you should have a warranty on any work like that

Only coolant I am aware of that meets SLLC specs is Zerex Asian, but admittedly I have not looked recently at what's out there.

There's also this from Pep Boys. It's a concentrate so it works easier for those whom are going the full flush with distilled H2O and shooting for an easy 50/50 fill afterwards.

I don't like that it doesn't have more detailed specifications, but it does seem to be pretty close to the factory stuff...

Far as I can tell it matches the factory stuff close enough, so that's 2 coolants I would personally recommend if people can't get a hold of the Toyota stuff. Thanks for sharing that.

Though I wouldn't go by their mileage/time recommendation, it's a bit weird. I'd stick by Toyota's recommendation (first service at 10yr/100k, followed by 5yr/50k service intervals).
