Unknown Noise - Trans or Something Else?

So for the past week I started to notice a strange intermittent noise. When the truck gets up to operating temp is when it will start usually, but then it will just go away sometimes. Yesterday I noticed after the truck sat for a couple minutes right when it was doing it, it stopped. It seems completely random though as far as I can tell.

The noise is a metallic wuuuring if that makes any sense. It sounds sort of like a fan, but not really and I think it is coming from down by the transmission.

Any ideas would be awesome, I can replace the trans myself, but I would rather not have to spend the money lol.

Your best bet is taking it to a Automotive Tech that specializes in, or at least has a lot of experience with NVH (Noise, vibration, Harshness) issues.

There is no way we can accurately guess what the noise is, without at least hearing it. You could try and record the noise, and then let us hear it.

Yea I think Im going to try and record it tonight and see if any one has any thoughts, but I know it will be really hard to pinpoint anything from a video with out being able to here the direction where the sound is coming from...

I think my 99 is making the same noise that you are talking about. But I only hear it when there is something I'm driving next to for the sound to bounce off of.

If it's an intermittent 2-5 second "whirring" sound followed by a gentle click / pop that you can feel in the brake pedal and usually happens after you come to a stop it's probably the ABS system running self-checks, and isn't usually anything to worry about. I used to notice mine doing that pretty frequently, but I notice it much less often now since I did the 13WL Tundra caliper / rotor conversion (not sure why that is though).

Nope Its only when accelerating never when the brakes are on. It will happen under both hard and gentle accel too..
