Just to make sure, the problem you'd like to fix is that the passenger's side door doesn't unlock when you turn the key twice in the driver's side door?

Does the passenger's door unlock when you press the unlock button on the inside of the driver's door?

the only way to unlock the passenger door is by putting the key on the passenger door. and also i have to turn key opposite way on that side for some reason

The backwards part is normal. My old Malibu did that as well on the passenger side.

Your door's lock is still physically connected to the keyhole (tumbler) in the door but it seems that the electric lock on that side is not working.

This could be one of two things. Either the electric motor on that side is bad/isn't getting power or the electric lock mechanism is disconnected from the lock itself.

You should go stand near the passenger side door and pess the unlock button twice on the key fob (or have someone press the lock/unlock button in the driver's door). If you hear a noise from the passenger's door then your electrics are working and it's just disconnected from the locking mechanism. If you don't hear anything in the door then the electrics aren't working and you'll have to troubleshoot from there.
